Which anime series and films do you think have been the best this year? I've fallen pretty far behind on my viewing, but out of the series I've watched all the way through, I rather enjoyed Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (even though I have some problems with it towards the end), Orange, Sakamoto desu ga?, and Konosuba (which is a great satire). The others I watched were either mediocre or quite poor.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Yuri on Ice, and Mob Psycho 100 are probably my top 3. Mob Psycho is really great looking while still telling a worthwhile story with great characters, YoI is well-written and super entertaining, and Rakugo is downright masterpiece material. I think it has been a pretty good year, all things considered.

Yuri on Ice and Mob Psycho 100 are both in my queue, but I couldn't make it through Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I don't mind things that are slow, not at all, but it was just kind of tedious for me unfortunately. I did like the art style, though, and I appreciated that it was doing something different.

I didn't watch many new ones this year.

Hai to gensô no Grimgar. Absolutely loved that one for it's somewhat dark tone. There were a lot of series' of this kind since SoA, but I thought Grimgar stood above all the rest.

Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko: Everything Flows. Slightly better remake of the original short. Quick watch, hard to be disappointed, but not special either.

Kono subarashii sekai ni *beep* o!. Sorely disappainted with Konosuba. Starting out terryfingly and went downhill into a snore-fest quick.

Kizumonogatari: I Tekketsu-hen. The absolutely and by far worst anime film I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure how you can mess up such a premise, though it being 'ovarrated' (sorry, in lack for a better word) had to do with my disappointed.

Haven't seen as much anime as I would have like to (mainly due to procrastinating) but I go with Boku No Hero and Kiznaiver. Only two I honestly really enjoyed this year

Knowing the FBI the poor soul has to read, EVERY fanfiction for hidden messages. EVERY picture has to be looked at for secret edits. Then they have to break 624 64bit ecriptioned files (not to hard) that lead them to an empty folder that looks like it has 2 gb of something of varian size., but in reality there is nothing there. but once they get to the meat and poptarts. I have a program that will create 200 more empty files if they found my loli folder, if they cant ques a simple answer only I know of, the program will move to one of the 200 encrypted folders that was made if it failed to open the folder.

It's a bit odd to see a Lupin show that won't really have Lupin or his gang in it. But the guy playing Zenigata looks good.

I would watch this! I've been a Lupin III fan since the mid-2000s. I haven't actually seen the entire live action film (2013) yet, or even the 1970s one. It would be interesting and strange to see Zenigata carry out his job without Lupin being in it, at least prominently. Is this supposed to be a Zenigata origins story?

Here's hoping Zenigata gets his own animated focus someday. So far, he's the only one not to get one yet, now that Goemon's is coming out soon this year.

He's incompetent only compared to Lupin. Otherwise he can match up with the best of the crooks he's tracking down. He's put down his fair share of crooks over the years, and has managed to arrest Lupin temporarily.

Anybody seen this movie? It shows the horrifying effects of nuclear weapons being used and it's based on a true story from Hiroshima, Japan.

I've been waiting for this anime short film for years now. There have even been trailers for it for the 5 years or more. I even remember reading on the creator's page that it was coming out in summer of 2015. Okay, that didn't happen. No big deal. Sometimes these things take time. But where is it now? Do any of you even know what I'm talking about? The first one was great. But I'm afraid something went wrong and now the sequel is never coming out.

I loved Cencoroll and really hope for the sequel too. another has it listed for 2017, but I guess it's more like a place holder. No info, nothing. Hope this comes out at some time or another...

Do you consider those 70s fairytale animated films as anime or cartoons? I'm asking, because I got one of them recommended a while ago on this boards while asking for anime films.

I just watched it Sekai meisaku dôwa: Hakuchô no mizûmi (1981) and have a hard time seeing how this is supposed to be anime. But then again, I saw it on another anime list on this board. That it's a japanese animation doesn't automatically make it an anime, right? Any thoughts on, why it's an anime or rather a cartoon or something completely different?

アニメ is a loan word from the French 'animé' and refers to animation in general, regardless of origin. The Simpsons, South Park and Powerpuff Girls have all ranked in charts in ニュータイプ and アニメージュ.

If you must make a distinction between anime and animation, the only somewhat valid distinction is country of origin, and even then not always given that co-productions between Japan and other countries exist. For example, Interstella 5555, which I bring up because a track from Daft Punk's "Discovery" just came on and that's too much of a coincidence to ignore. No, seriously. Weird.

All those titles you sort-of linked are anime, even if your weeb senses erroneously force you to think otherwise. The 70s had a lot of anime adaptations of European fairy tales, both as co-productions and as straight Japanese productions. Besides, the ones you referenced are all from Toei, FFS. Trying to argue that they aren't 'anime' is like arguing that ゲド戦記 or 借りぐらしのアリエッティ aren't 'anime' because they're adaptations of English-language novels. Toei is about as 'anime' as it gets.

Thank you for the answer. I was always aware of that a distinction between those two 'categories' is hard to do and more or less non-existent. But then again, both words exist and I'm sure everyone has his or her pre-set mind about a difference of those two. For instance in Germany, cartoons have a stigma of being 'for children'. Hence japanese animations that would be considered for an adult audience have until maybe the last 10 years always be dubbed in a very child-like and children-considered manner, up to a point that it's impossible to watch them. Lately a transgression has been in progress (due to a generation having grown up with a higher tolerance to watching animated films), where cartoons and anime have been seperated between being 'for children' (cartoons) and 'for children and/or grown-ups' (anime). I hope you can see, where the mentioned fairy-tale adaptations fit in my argument.

Both words exist because it's a language thing, but all the same it is a loan word in Japanese, which is why it's written in katakana. Contrast to manga, which is written in kanji, 漫画.

Cartoons have the same stigma in the US as well, and you have a lot of weebs that completely lose their minds if you dare to call an anime a cartoon (despite both terms being 100% accurate). Still, adult animation existed in the west outside of Japan and has for decades. Ralph Bakshi is a perfect example; Coonskin might have talking animals in it, but it very much so earned it's R/18 rating. That's just one example, of which there are plenty more.

There's outlier/experimental stuff from both sides, along with the more common, conventional fare, and it's all animation in the end. Don't let the weebs fool you into thinking otherwise.

Swan Lake is anime, regardless of which definition you use. Outside Japan, anime usually means "Japanese animation," and everything about Swan Lake is Japanese (director, language, production company, etc). Inside Japan, anime just means "animation."

If you define anime by style, it's still anime. Swan Lake was made by Toei, the company that made most of the anime movies from the 60s and 70s. Toei was the company that defined the common anime movie styles of that time, and those movies had a big influence on later anime movies. Swan Lake had a style similar to other anime movies of the time.

If you define anime by time period, then maybe it's not anime, but I've never seen anyone define it like that.

Everyone just looks like bad cosplay and they never get the budget needed. Wasn't Bleach rumored to get one a long time ago, probably fell apart when the anime started to decline and delay. I expect Naruto to get one in the future and sadly that won't work since its such a slow burn can't have kid actors either.
