More black people have been nominated this year compared to last year.

Do you think this is being done because of merit or as damage control for the lack of diversity in the nominations last year?

significantly more films that appeal to the academy's sensibilities focused around black people. so neither.

ONE nomination would've been more than last year. What's your point exactly?

You beat me to it.

The only nomination were merit can be questionned in that group of actor is Octavia Spencer (don't remember her doing anything special in that movie), but that category was not strong, so being a well known actor with a previous nomination in a very popular movie will often push you in.

I think it's because there was a Fences, Loving, Hidden Figures, Moonlight in 2016. Don't get me wrong I'm glad they made the membership more diverse it needed it but the Academy can only nominate what's available.

I'd be concerned if something like Birth Of A Nation had gotten a bunch of noms.. as it is, it looks more coincidence. Possibly some of the less reactionary black filmmakers looked at last year and decided to make more of an effort to make award-worthy films.

The blacks in 2015 just didn't do as good a job as they did last year.
