Here is one movie I've been wanting to see for a while. What's the general consensus on it?

It's visually breathtaking in every way, but a tough movie to sit through.

Parts of it are visually breathtaking, but it plays like there wasn't a finished script or any vision in the editing. Even so, I still watch it when I get the chance. It's a beautiful train wreck.

I've watched the documentary Final Cut, which is available on YouTube. It's fascinating to see how this career ending film came to be.

A beautiful film to watch, just hard to sit through - the original cut of 5 hours 25 minutes must have been hell - and more than a little unwatchable.

I saw a shortened version of it in the early 1980s and it was disjointed, to say the least. The DVD version is better but not by much.

The cinematography is breathtaking. The score is excellent. The plot is interesting. And considering that EVERY character is under-developed, the actors aren't bad. Cimino's choices are WAY off. Poor pacing is only the most obvious problem.

The region B blu-ray has no subtitles which is disastrous as the sound mix makes large slabs of the dialogue unintelligible.

Despite this, for some reason I like the film. 7.5/10

Bummer: I was hoping I'd finally be able to understand exactly what John Hurt was saying in his valedictorian speech.

It's a great anti-western, but as others have mentioned, definitely flawed. Badly under-characterized, and the sound mix blows. 8/10

Make sure you watch the right version that isn't trimmed to shit. It is visually breathtaking but it is long.

A pretty underrated, if long winded western from Cimono. It really isn't deserving of its notorious reputation.

It actually felt like a five hour movie cut down to three in that it seemed there was much more story, details and connections I just wasn't getting-- a lot questions and unresolved bits and pieces that began to crop up in the back of my skull by the time I got to the end.

The longest version is the best. It's undervalued.
