I see a lot of people complaining about the subpar singing and dancing. The idea of La La Land was a realistic musical. It's why they chose mediocre singers and dancers at the beginning. They also chose good dancers like Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as well. They disappeared into their characters so well that people actually think now that Gosling and Stone are bad singers. The thing is, they are above their level of singing and dancing in La La Land. If people pay attention closely, their vocals grow as the movie progresses. They under sang and under dance and by the end of it, their dancing and singing were bits better than before.
