Sounds like a fan film title.
4 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 14:15
What wouldn't sound like a fan title?
Post some examples.

Star Wars Episode 8 - The Jedi finds his trouser

I was sure they were gonna go with 'Whine of the Emo'.
7 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 14:56
Woo-hoo. Sounds like something filtered through umpteen different studio execs.
8 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 15:11
It's better than the force awakens.

Sure, fine.
I've got to say, while I didn't finish it, I rewatched the first half of TFA lastnight but sort of got distracted, and I love it! I'll give it a full rewatch soon, but watching it again it's didn't seem like a rehash of ANH at all, the characters are great, it might be the most emotionally involving out of all of them. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, that Poe guy, Harrison Ford and Adam Driver are all great in their roles. It just must have been me that was turned off a bit when I first saw it, this film is great! It hits all the right notes, the action is great, there are nuances, Daisy Ridley doesn't just seem like "strong female character shoehorned for equality's sake," she has great presence. So on a full rewatch it might be another 10 (I rate all the SW films 10).
I was probably clinging too much to prequel nostalgia when I first watched it. I still maintain those prequels are great, but if one were to pick out a shortcoming in George Lucas' storytelling, it's that he's great with myth/metaphor, ideas and world-building, and very bad with characters/actually getting you involved in the story/the human element (although it kind of makes sense for the films in his favour), which TFA does so well while still feeling like a Star Wars film. I was surprised, I was really meh about TFA when I first saw it now I'm totally into it, it takes the best of both worlds (OT and PT) and it's excellent. Can't wait for 8 and to see where this trilogy goes.

I agree totally. TFA is great, especially beacause of the cast. Daisy Ridley is so sweet. She almost made me turn straight.
I also love the prequels, especially one and three. They are much more mature than the original trilogy. They give the saga lots of depth.

The cast is great, the acting is excellent. Daisy Ridley is fantastic in the film, there are a few scenes that stand out in which she has a very commanding presence, and she's very attractive. John Boyega is also great, and his panic attack and awakening is done very well. It's all done very fast but it works and it's believable.
The prequels are great and they have great ideas and depth. There are so many ideas in that film you couldn't cut it with a chainsaw, and when you watch the films with that in mind they're very absorbing. That and they have great art direction. They're great films but narrow-minded fanboys tend to get hung up by taking them literally rather than as mythology, and pick apart all the small details and they want their Star Wars to be separate from the cartoony childishness they see in the prequels, when that doesn't matter and it all makes sense and adds up because the films aren't to be taken literally. Those films work on multiple levels and yet they're panned so much.
TFA was advertised as being the opposite to the prequels in a lot of ways but I don't think that's true, I think it takes a bit from both the OT and the PT.

Sounds okay to me.

Kinda boring, but it works.
14 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 17:17
I hope it's not the story of the movie.

Watch this thread to see how cleverly people can kid themselves ("sounds like a fan film title", "sounds like something filtered through umpteen different studio execs") by over-analysing and reading imaginary implications into a piece of text that's three words long, and the first word is "the".
Anyone who thinks there's a bad omen in the title has missed the genuine bad omen that comes immediately after the announcement of the title:
THE LAST JEDI is written and directed by Rian Johnson...

I'm going pot, kettle black on that one.
Overanalyze? Imaginary implication? It's an official Star Wars episode title. It either rings or it doesn't. Describing the latter in so many words hardly equates a contrivance.

Reiterated, expressing in relatively simple terms how the title lacks spark isn't exactly a model of overanalyzing...
I get that, but this is merely you saying you're innocent. The pot-kettle-black metaphor requires me to be guilty (guilty of the same thing I'm accusing you of), and why you think that - that's what I'm not getting.
Saying the title lacks spark isn't over-analysing. Saying it sounds like it's been vetted by multiple studio heads does. In response to the fellow who said "Sounds like a fan title," someone else reasonably asked, "What wouldn't?" I could say the same thing here: "What title wouldn't sound as though it had been vetted by multiple studio heads?" (Mainly titles so retarded that we'd know the first studio head who saw them would say: "Nope.")

Meaning, you accusing others of overanalyzing in this particular instance is, ironically, you looking too much into what isn't there. Like below:
Saying the title lacks spark isn't over-analysing. Saying it sounds like it's been vetted by multiple studio heads does.
Well, yours is a fairly liberal standard for what constitutes as much. Overanalyzing would be like some SFBE-style insistence on layered political motives or, like The Road Warrior, using the title alone to springboard onto yet another multi-paragraph diatribe concerning the total erosion of artistic output from all things Disney/Marvel/Star Wars. Me? I was merely expressing through some form or semblance why it lacks spark, little more. Again, this is a /tele/ topic. People are going to communicate such things.
That being said, I don't think it unreasonable to assume that the title in question was "considered" to a degree by a number of players, if not hierarchically to boot. What wouldn't sound so committee'd? Eh, probably something a bit more eccentric. There's a making-of featurete somewhere on the DVD/Blu-ray releases where Ben Burt talks about first hearing 'The Empire Strikes Back' and immediately thinking how ridiculous it sounded, until afterwards realizing that these are intended as throwbacks to vintage serial chapter titles: pulpy-sensationalistic, leaping off the page, poster, screen etc. That aesthetic sensibility, though, seems to have been reduced to a level of inoculation.
To put it another way, there's really nothing here to overanalyze even if I wanted to; suffice to say, the title just comes off entirely normalized in a modern commercial sense. Figuratively, it'd be equivalent to Indiana Jones and the Search for the Treasure. 😐 Wow. Wiffle ball, meet plastic bat.
But, again, it is what it is.

That would be over-analysing it more. You only over-analysed it a little bit.

Not at all unreasonable to assume this at all, but rather unreasonable to think one can divine this reasonable assumption from the title itself.
Before the title was announced, one could reasonably infer, "I bet a lot of executives vetted it, whatever it is." Afterwards, our epistemic position has not changed.

Thinking of SFBE he must think the First Order is the place for himself. No one is taught to think for themselves just for leadership.

It was a brilliant move by George Lucas to name Episode 1 "The Phantom Menace." It's a good title alone, but it's so cryptic and vague, it was the perfect title for the first Star Wars film in twenty years and no one forgot it, because we didn't know what the fuck it was. On the run-up to the film I could name anything in it, any character, any ship, but I still had no idea what the phantom menace was. Only now do I get it, but it's still a weird way of putting it. Marketing genius. Have a whole load of characters and ships and worlds in your film and leave the title vague and undefinable to get everyone talking.

>>15Why is that a bad omen, you weirdo? That's the one thing keeping me interested after the blandly generic nonsense of TFA. Johnson is a quality director. He may actually inject some genuine feeling and originality in this most tired of franchises.
24 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 20:33
Tired franchise? Not apparent in The Force Awakens, but the two Johnson films I've seen (Brick and Looper) make me think he was born tired. He trudged his way through those two films.
25 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 20:56
It was especially apparent in TFA, which didn't contain a single interesting scene, novel idea, or even an original plot, but was designed by some corporate committee to cash in on empty nostalgia of overgrown children with taste coming out of their asses and the undemanding excitability of their 6 year old sons. It was a miserable experience.
Rogue One, for all its myriad faults and sluggish tone, at least tried to go its own way.
I liked both Johnson films you mentioned, and especially his two Breaking Bad episodes (the other one he directed was a bit of a miss). Particularly The Fly, which was a masterpiece of economical but exhilaratingly inventive directing.

Yeah agreed.

It's not super amazing, but it's not bad. I like it enough to still want to see the movie (though I honestly don't put a lot of stock into a film's title).
28 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 21:57
I don't really care, but it strikes me as kind of weird to have the word "last" in a title for the middle film in a trilogy.

Star Wars Episode 9 - No More Jedi
30 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 22:15
Why? I think it just sets the groundwork for a new order. There have to be others out there. People who feel something inside they seem one step ahead. They just do not know it is the Force that dwells within them.
31 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 22:26
Doesn't this confirm that Luke dies in the movie, since Rey is a Jedi and she can't be the last unless Luke is no longer in the picture? I suppose it could be Jedi plural.
32 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 22:35
Yes, there could be hundreds of last Jedi.
33 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 22:44
Also I'm not sure what the criterion is for being a full "Jedi". Rey didn't have any training or anything, so it may just refer to Luke.
34 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 22:56
Luke is the last trained Jedi
35 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 23:16
SW TLJ... hmm, that looks weird.
36 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 23:41
So we had a Return of the Jedi... only for it to be the last one? :(
37 Name: Anonymous : 2017-01-23 23:59
That referred to Anakin Skywalker's redemption according to a lot of people.
Also in Episode 7 it mentions in the very scroll that Luke is the remaining Jedi....or so we are led to believe....

Still amazed that anybody finds The Phantom Menace to be more "mature" then ANH or TESB.
39 Name: SuperFratBoyExtreme : 2017-01-24 01:38
You didn't find Jar Jar stepping in doo doo to be mature?
