Why was The Handmaiden shot on digital ?

I was assuming this was shot on film seeing it's foreign from a serious director and the trailer has nice colors. But info about it says it's digital.

Do you know about the reason the director made that choice ?

Foreign filmmakers don't shoot digital? This is new.

On the contrary, in France for example we are surrounded with digital unfortunately. My point is, this is a foreign artistic movie and that's the kind of movies that still uses film a lot.

Who cares? You couldn't tell, you asshat.

Digital is not inferior to film, depends on how it's used. The Handmaiden has some of the best cinematography of 2016.

It can look good, but the thing is everytime I see a good looking digital movie, I'm like "but it would have been much more stunning with film". In that way I'd say it is inferior.

The exception is when the style of the movie fits digital, like movies from Fincher and Refn. The Handmaiden however does not fit digital at all, hence me wondering why the director made that artistic choice.

The Far East is almost exclusively digital.

Digital now exceeds film in every specification.

Except it still doesn't look like film. So film is still superior to anyone who think film looks better.

Probably because it's much cheaper with comparable quality.

But acclaimed directors generally impose their artistic choices. If even Chan Wook Park can't have what he wants we are in a sad state of affairs.

Film has its merits, but why allocate a larger part of your budget on film stock than is strictly necessary when that money can be better spent on more pressing areas?

The way a film looks is a very important element. Most movies I love which are shot on film I would probably rate one point lower if they were digital.

So, certainly a better investment IMO than sparing some money for some details.

Dude, being that ideological about aesthetics is dumb. The film looks great. Concentrate on more important things.

What does it have to do with ideology ? It's about the look of the movie. For me movies are first and foremost a visual medium.

Well that's a damned bunch of 🐴 💩. Digital has improved but film is still superior.
