not impressed. Why is it so praised? Other movies were so bad this year? Maybe false hype for worthless Oscars and other awards?

Funnily you haven't rated it. Could it be you are lying through your teeth.

Yeah, because you are the only one here that watches movies, we know.

(Although you never, ever, have anything intelligent or constructive to say about any of them.)

It was very impressive because shooting long takes like that without edits on film is really difficult compared to digital cameras. He was also directing around over 200 people and so for a 3rd feature film, one that is 100x bigger than Whiplash is very impressive. The story is simple, but is a truthful one because it is Chazelle's personal story on his rise to glory and his experience. I think this is not a movie for everyone, but it's understandable. People will hate it if it's not for them. This movie is for passionate and seekers. A lot of people who hate Hollywood because of their social elitism, egotistical nature, and self indulgence to art will hate this film. The movie inspires people to be anything they want and break from cynicism, but a lot of commoners think that the world doesn't need anymore artists and need more commoners like themselves. This movie will mostly inspire artists to move to LA to join the industry and that will just fill the commoner's hate more for the movie.

Thankyou! Someone who knows what the flip they are talking about. The film is a magnificent achievement.

I don't agree with the rest. I'm usually one of the cynical people who doesn't like much awards bait trite.. but some awards bait films are not just awards bait, are more than awards bait, and are actually just fantastic films that the awards just happened to do the right thing and actually recognise this time.

The film is not elitist, egotistical or self indulgent, it's just a fantastically crafted production.

The genius of Chazelle cannot be denied. He's a beast. One of the most inventive and full of life and energy directions I have seen in a long time. On that level I would compare it to Citizen Kane or Ivan's Childhood or the early Godard films, pure force and a step up from Whiplash which was already very impressive direction wise.

It is actually very complex, structure wise too. It's not easy at all to do a film this way and make it feel natural, it is in fact almost impossible (he doesn't succeed ALL the time, but it's close). The fantasy-music scenes bend with the reality scenes extremely well, and given that the film deals precisly with dreams vs reality this adds yet another layer.

The only criticism I do have is that it might sometimes seem to overvalue glamour.
