by Aliens fans if Newt & Hicks weren't killed off or do you think it still would've been disliked no matter what? That was arguably the main reason why most disliked it, would have changed anything if they survived and had a larger role in Alien³?

Possibly that said the positive reaction to Neill Blomkamp possible Alien sequel which will bring them back speaks volumes

It would have a slightly better rep probably, I might have considered liking it. But idk plenty of people like the fact that they got killed off.

I think for them to live, it would've had to be a different kind of film, different tone. But even so, I do think killing them off is what most people dislike about it.

Yeah, I agree, their deaths really added to the bleak "anything can happen" vibe throughout the film, with them around, it wouldn't have felt AS bleak as it did.

Absolutely. I remember seeing in the first time in the theater and immediately thinking "What the *beep*! After all they went through to be rescued! Why!!" It was an immediate downer and the rest of the dour film didn't do anything to lift that feeling. Can you imagine how you would have felt about "The Force Awakens" if Han Solo had been killed in the first five minutes?

I'm a huge fan and I don't mind. I love alien 3 just as much as the first two. Franchise went downhill with Ressurection.

I didn't mind that Hicks and Newt were killed off; it was the lazy manner in how the writers wrote them out that bothered me.

There was no way the Queen could have laid an egg aboard the ship and considering how adamant Ripley was not to relive her past experiences, wouldn't she have found something on the scanner? Also, if you're going to remove two characters whom Ripley bonded with in a memorable manner, then create some compelling ones in the sequel. The lookalike prisoners just didn't elicit the same sympathy as the supporting characters in the previous films.

I don't dislike Alien 3, but those are some of the reasons why I don't rate it as high as the first two.

Newt is one of the worst characters in cinematic history.

No, Alien3 had other problems. If the movie wasn't so messed up by executives, then I'm sure the fans would like it more. As it is, it's more of an interesting production failure then anything.

Not at all. What would have made Alien3 better would have been to give Pete Postlethwaite a larger role. The man is one of the best to ever do it. He's already one of the highlights in the film.

...But yeah, even with Biehn and co, that script is just plain bad. The second flick is a classic along with the first because it blended action with horror. The third does neither one well, and definitely doesn't blend them. I've seen folks on /tele/ try to raise morale about Alien³ but I just can't do it.

Resurrection however is mostly action and it's dopey but better than Alien³ and I enjoy me some Winona.

First off, Alien 3 is still a great flick to me.

I score it 8/10 and the first two films, though wildly different, both at 10/10.

It was CRUSHING to know Hicks didn't make it. Didn't care one bit about the girl quite frankly. She served her purpose and played her role fine but that amount of screaming she did was the most since Poltergeist.

Someone above mentioned though the films would be of considerably different tone WITH Hicks and that is for certain.

Perhaps he could have been in a coma or some other plot line where he was still alive but not entirely in the film. Either way, he was my favorite character outside of Hudson from Aliens and it was devastating not to have him survive.

I never understood why people are freaked out by character deaths in a horror movie.

I think the workprint version is pretty darn good. As time goes on I think I like it just as well as Aliens, if not more so. The only things that hold it back, I think, was the choice to do many of the alien shots with high speed/stop-motion photography, as well as some other aesthetic choices, like the squished images from the alien POV shots. Those kind of cheesy elements just don't hold up very well. But overall, I like the film a lot. I love the utter darkness of it. The bleak sense of impending doom and hopelessness was very well done.
