Thoughts on the films of George A. Romero?

I've always enjoyed his zombie films especially. Night of the Living Dead is so incredibly atmospheric and creepy, Dawn of the Dead is a masterpiece of cinema in general and one of the best films of all time, and Day of the Dead is awesome. Unfortunately his later zombie films are nowhere near on the same level but I mildly enjoyed them, especially Land of the Dead. Diary of the Dead was serviceable and Survival of the Dead was pretty mediocre from what I can remember. I may rewatch them soon.
His realistic take on the vampire film with Martin is pretty good and his film dealing with mass hysteria The Crazies is an intense and chaotic ride.
I still haven't seen Creepshow and Monkey Shines but they look pretty good.
I would like to see him direct one more zombie film. It would be interesting to see how it fares after the rise of The Walking Dead.

Creepshow is quite awesome. It's both funny and creepy, and all the segments are great. I can't get enough of it.

I'm mostly a fan. I like all of his Dead films up until the halfway point of Diary, and Martin, Creepshow, The Crazies, and a lot of Knightriders are very strong films. I don't think he's constantly perfect, but I do know that some of his failures (The Dark Half) have interesting backstories into the reasons why they aren't weren't as successful.

Like many directors, he's had home runs and strike-outs.

He's great. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn, Day and Creepshow are favorites of mine. I still need to see Martin though.

He's a contender for my favorite horror director.
Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead are probably the two best zombie films (depending on what you consider a zombie film, I might put Cemetery Man over them), and really some of the best the horror genre has to offer. My preference completely depends on my mood - if I'm feeling something more fun and "epic", then it's Dawn all day, but if I want something more purely bleak and scary I'd go with Night. They're both great, can't go wrong with either.
Day of the Dead has by far my favorite zombie makeup effects, and I've seen quite a few zombie flicks. Unfortunately, the story/atmosphere/characters of this one just aren't as well done as they are in the previous two films, so it's a clear notch below for me - still very good though.
Creepshow and Martin are both quite good too.

I will probably check out Creepshow soon.
Have you seen the Night of the Living Dead remake directed by Tom Savini? I thought it was pretty decent.

Yes. The Tom Savini movie was one of the first horror movies I ever watched and definitely my first zombie flick. That was on TV back in 2000, I think. It's a very faithful remake of the 1968 film and I really liked it. I own it on DVD now and hope to re-watch it someday.

I haven't. I can count on one hand the number of horror remakes that I've liked, so I'm in no rush to see it.

It's good. George Romero also produces and writes the new screenplay for it.

Dawn of the Dead is one of the best films I've ever seen. Bruiser is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Mr Mixed Bag.

Night of the Living Dead is an obvious classic of the genre and Dawn of the Dead is even better, being both Romero's best movie (IMO) and one of the finest zombies flicks out there. Day of the Dead disappointed me, however. Despite improved make-up effects, the film felt kind of soulless. There were no likeable characters to root for as in the earlier films. And the setting itself (an underground military installation) was just bland.
As for his non-zombie work - enjoyed Creepshow, hated Martin.
Monkey Shines is on my DVR at the moment and plan on checking it out sometime this year.

Bub the zombie.

And the two helicopter pilots.

OK. Fair enough. Bub was fine. But that doesn't make up for the rest of the film as far as I'm concerned.

It had it's good points but was still a disappointment after Dawn of the Dead.

I'm a big fan. I like the majority of his movies to varying degrees and I find something in anything George Romero directs. Least favourites would be 'Knightriders' & 'Survival Of The Dead'.
My Top 10 (in no particular order) :
01. Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
02. Hungry Wives (1972)
03. The Crazies (1973)
04. Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
05. Martin (1978)
06. Day Of The Dead (1985)
07. Monkey Shines (1988)
08. The Dark Half (1993)
09. Bruiser (2000)
10. Diary Of The Dead (2007)
I'm still holding out hope that Romero has one more feature to come since he's been out of action seven years now. Nice thread!

The first three Dead flicks, Monkey Shines and the first two Creepshows are really good, in my book. Survival, Diary and Bruiser were the absolute worst.
The others are middle-of-the-road.

As a zombie enthusiast, I dig his work even though some movies were less than great.
Just added Creepshow to my TO SEE, thanks for the tip !
