Sam Raimi, Wes Craven, John Carpenter or Dario Argento?

When it comes to horror films, four legends are almost always mentioned, which of these legends is your favorite of the bunch and whose work do you prefer? Sam Raimi, John Carpenter, Wes Craven or Dario Argento? And what is your favorite film from them?

And which of their films, if any, scared you the most?

And how do you rank them?

Argento
Raimi
Carpenter
Craven

Argento is a genius, Raimi is consistently good no matter the genre, Carpenter forgot how to make a good movie some time in the 90s and Craven was a hack whose only great films are the original Nightmare On Elm Street and The Serpent And The Rainbow.

I like Argento's mise-en-scene, but except for "Susperia" the rest of his films are kind of sloppy for me. Same Raimi, considering he made "Spiderman" is a better filmmaker, so it's John Carpenter for "The Thing." I put them all in the "pretty good" category. None of them truly special. "Big Trouble in Little China" may even bump John Carpenter from that list.

Raimi is consistent, I agree. I feel his films A Simple Plan & The Gift are quite underrated as well, same for Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness.

Dracula 3D automatically makes Argento the worst, regardless of how impressive his previous work was. That movie wasn't just a glorified SyFy movie with tits, it wouldn't even rank highly as a Syfy movie when compared to the other shlock.

Yeah, that film was pretty terrible.

I like all of them. My favourite film from each one is, respectivelly, The Evil Dead 2, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Thing, and Suspiria; all 10/10 to me.

Argento is my favourite from the bunch, and he is also one of my all time favourite filmmakers. He is really an unique voice that unfortunately has been silent for quite a time. I'm not sure how I'd rank the others.

Sam Raimi is the best by far. He's the most diverse storyteller in terms of the kinds of movies that he tackles, he's the most creative in terms of the kinds of horror movies he pitches and, quite frankly, he makes the best movies. Evil Dead II alone is superior to anything any of those other 3 will EVER make.

I can't say I'm "scared" of any of their films, but if I had to choose, again, I'd choose Raimi.

Carpenter by far. I'm sure Argento is great at what he does, but giallo never did it for me. There are some great visuals in movies like Suspiria but overall it's boring and unfocused. I think he falters as a story teller. Craven is a good story teller, but his visuals aren't as strong as Carpenter.

And truthfully, I never saw the big deal about Raimi. I thought his Spider-Man movies were awesome, but Evil Dead was too silly and claymation for me to take it seriously. And if the point was to be tongue in cheek, well, that doesn't appeal to me either.

But for my money, Carpenter has the best overall skill set, as well as the better overall movies. I think The Fog, Halloween and Christine are some of the more spooky visually stunning horror films I've seen.

Both of those movies were confusing and cheesy but still somewhat entertaining so yes.

John Carpenter - Easily the best here.
Dario Argento - Great director but i would have replaced him with Mario Bava.
Wes Craven - Made solid impact with Nightmare On Elm ST & Scream (love it or hate it) and cnontributed a lot of cult films.
Sam Raimi - Evil Dead trilogy is amazing but that is all he has... unfair to put him against the other three.

Scary film? Nightmare scared me as a kid.

Best film? The Thing... one of the greatest horror films ever made.

Even if you only like horror films, Raimi still made the really good Drag me to Hell.

I agree that Bava is much better than Argento.

Ignoring his late output which is dire, John Carpenter. The man composes his own music. What's not to like.

Wes Craven
John Carpenter
Dario Argento
Sam Raimi

Craver I think is quite underrated as a director. People only know him because of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, but he's made some other good movies. Not that they are masterpieces, but they're still good. I'm talking about films like Deadly Blessing,
The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Hills Have Eyes.

Never heard of that last gal or guy, but I'm a Carpenter fan more than the others (whom I also like).

1) Carpenter

2) Raimi

3) Craven

But Craven and Raimi are really close, just a lot of hits and misses for both.
