The final 30 minutes are good. But the rest of the movie is kinda...there.

The cgi characters and scenes took me out of it sometimes. Some of it is pretty good though.

Characters are try hard ( hey look at me, Im not your typical character) and they lack substance save for that Gin chick.

Vader at the end was the best part. Should have used him more imo

Overall, fun in parts, but mostly just meh. Yeah yeah, we get it, terrorism is happening in our world too, but I go to movies to escape that sh!t.

No, keeping Vader's presence at a minimum was smart. This SW movie was by far the most war-like out of all of them with lots of tactics, strategy, and guerilla warfare at play. Keeping the mystical element of it to a minimum (like having Chirrut be Force-sensitive but not a Jedi) kept the war-like feeling of the film intact. Once the movie's climax had occurred then seeing afterwards Vader go all Force-crazy is acceptable.

Also, I will never understand the "not necessary" argument. Technically no film is necessary, they're not oxygen, water, etc. If you mean necessary to the overall mythology then I consider that way too subjective a stance one way or the other that having a discussion on it seems really pointless IMHO. Probably why Screen Junkies chose to have that topic as a Drunk Movie Fight as they knew even sober that there's no way one would be likely to convince the other.

8/10. A fun story in the SW universe that shows another side to the conflict. Unknown heroes who get dirty and fight tough. A wide range of characters with unique personalities. Great sets and backgrounds. It added depth and flavor to the overall story.

My list is never really consistent. It has gone down but I still give it a 7/10 or 8/10.

I have had it at 3, or 4. I do think R1 is a better overall movie though.

I've also had ANH at 2 and Jedi at 3. The only constant is Empire at 1.

I kinda like Phantom Menace.

One forgets that baby Anakin was the Anakin people hated there for a while, Hayden instantly took the spot. Less practical effects than Menace, terribly executed love story, but it's still better. Dooku was the best villain of the prequels and I like Obi-Wan being a detective.

I remember going out of the cinema after seeing Menace thinking "emergency landing on Tatooine, Force sensitive kid there, mentor dies, space battle to destroy a giant ball (with a ring around it this time), hmm...".

Lucas certainly said it best back then with "it's like poetry, it rhymes", weird nobody picked up on it until Another Another New Hope, I suppose that's why I wasn't bothered by it; it was a premise Star Wars had run with for a while.

Well, the computer-generated (motion capture?) Clone troopers are an eyesore and a mistake indeed. Both Clones and Sith were shot on 2K digital cameras, whereas Menace was shot on 35mm anamorphic, plus the the first prequel had a much lower CG-to-practical radio of special effects than the later two. It's understandable that some people would prefer Episode I over Episode II or even III.

When I rank Clones and Menace I have to weight the pros and cons of each.

Sure, Menace has Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd - who are both just awful. But, they aren't the real focus of the story. So, looking past those two, you get an ok story, and Lucas's dialogue isn't as noticeable as it is in Clones and Sith. You also get a fun Podrace and a cool finale, plus Darth Maul.

Now Clones, you get Hayden and Portman's hamfists shtfest of dialogue shoved into every orifice. The "I don't like sand..." line alone is worse than anything Jar Jar has ever done. Plus nothing really cool happens. The arena fight is kinda forced, Fett does nothing, and then Yoda pinballs around Tyranus for too long. meh. Balls of meh.

I will say that Clones is probably my least rewatched one, but we did get to see Kamino which was pretty cool, the tension between Deckard, ahem, Obi-Wan and Jango as they both are onto each other right after the former seeing the clones, an actual fist fight in the rain, those cool sonic bomb things, Anakin searching, finding and avenging his mother, Obi-Wans interrogation aaaand... Uh, well that's about it. Still though!

Oh and some shots of the clones battling droids were cool.

This is a negative. I think another actor may have been able to pull this off, maybe. But this scene was horrible.

I dunno, I don't remember much of the lines, just seeing him on a speeder bike talking to Jawas and *beep* finding her and then that creepy music kicking in.

As mentioned it's been a while but that scene isn't in there so that's a good sign!

He's a blind monk who can feel the Force, but isn't able to actually use it. It's why he's such a good fighter.

I imagine that's like being a really good boxer and not being able to fight because you've got one arm. Any other person in the galaxy would most probably hate the fact that they can feel the Force, but can't use it, whereas he embraces it.

Finn and that buddy that helps him escape had more chemistry in the first couple of minutes in Force Awakens than all the characters combined in Rogue.

Like I said, Poe and Finn had great chemistry (which is ironic to hear this as a positive since one of the critiques of TFA was that Finn and Poe's chemistry was forced...no pun intended). But the characters of R1 did too. Was it as good? Maybe not. But they weren't friends, they shared a common goal. Jyn, K2, and Cassian I thought were great on screen together.

Yeah I remember reading that, they gave off that vibe of two random people just barely escaping enemy territories together, that's why I had no issues with it at all.

I thought they were fine in Rogue One, but if there's one complaint I'll have it's that they still could've been more fleshed out. Just a bit.

He was a soldier who watched his friend die and wanted to escape the First Order. He gets sucked back into the fight after bumping into Rey and BB-8, but no matter what he's still determined to escape. He slowly befriends Rey and after he decides to leave, he watches her get taken away and realises that he cares about something more than his own survival.

Do you mean that personality? Because that's who Han Solo was. Except he was a greedy, self-centered smuggler and not a rookie Stormtrooper. It took three movies before Solo officially joined the Rebels, it took Finn about an hour.

Solo may have been working for the Rebels for three years between ANH and ROTJ, but that was because he had a debt to settle with Jabba the Hutt and the Rebels probably paid him for his service.

The problems with Finns character goes beyond just that. His whole shtick is an example of terrible writing in TFA

He was put into the first order at a young age. So young he doesn't even remember his parents..So around 1-2 years old. He then spends his whole life being indoctrinated.Quite literally his whole life revolves around the first order. Yet when we are introduced to Finn he doesn't act like an indoctrinated soldier..Nothing about him says he was trained from a young age to be a solider. Nothing about his personality says he was indoctrinated and holds any of the New Orders ideologies...This is lazy writing.

Oh and then you have Finn betray the first order cause he saw some of his friend storm troopers get mowed down.So what is Finns solution to seeing his friends get killed? Betray the first order and Kill them himself..See how excited he was on the tie fighter mowing down his friends before he escaped the ship with his gay lover?

Everything with Luke and Vader is great, same with the space battle and the speeder bike chase. The music and the special effects are amazing, but I dunno, a lot of the other stuff is honestly so and so.

There's something about them turning into the Scooby Doo gang all of a sudden that always rubbed me the wrong way. Even C-36O and R2-D2 followed with!

Also, Harrison Ford turned Solo into some lame, bumbling fool in this one and was just phoning it in basically.

I still enjoy it a lot, it's a good ending to the trilogy, but to call TFA lazy or whatever while still putting Jedi on a pedestal is kind of laughable.

Depth? I thought the Scariff spectacle was sick but I couldn't care about the sacrifices of any of the undeveloped characters. It's all technically impressive, but there really is nothing substantial going on here from a storytelling standpoint. A lot like his Godzilla film.

I agree with most of your points. The Force Awakens wasn't perfect but it was a better movie. Rogue One hits all these story beats on cue but I felt like it was missing the character in between. The action in those last 30 minutes is great though.

This'll be the only Star Wars movie I'll ever only give one viewing to. Gareth Edwards was a bad pick. It's not like the movie is undignified, it's just completely flavorless. When it was all over, it was like, "Who cares?". It's not like the SW universe is more robust now from this story.

It's a Star Wars movie without fun or interesting characters, and it's bad when everyone is upstaged by the damn droid.

The CGI face looked just that little bit awkward at parts, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It just felt really cool seeing Peter Cushing as Tarkin in a scene as if he'd never died.

I've really enjoyed watching the original trilogy, but I don't care about it to the point that I'd say "nothing's sacred anymore" when seeing characters return in new films.

The final scene was great, and it left me wanting more, which I guess is what it's supposed to do, and if it had had any more it could easily have ended up being too much.

In a few years when someone creates a thread entitled "Do you think Rogue One aged well?" everyone will call the CGI face scenes cringe-worthy ... or whatever term we use then.

Finally saw it.

Were the reshoots all the comedy scenes? They felt so out of place.

Felt like a Marvel movie in that its attempts at "world building" somehow make manage to make it all feel smaller. The action is all well executed for the most part, but the storytelling is shallow and the plot is paper thin. I wasn't at all effected by the deaths at the end because none of the central protagonists are developed in a meaningful way. 6 sounds about right.

Of course it's mostly just meh.

Garreth Edwards movies are all just meh. All of the new characters look dumb and without Vader this movie would have been as boring as Godzilla.

Well that was actually p. good. Can't beat the classic setting and all the throwbacks. Every scene where they paid tribute to the old movies was the best, like having the AT-ST walk in and fck sh!t up, or the AT-ATs at the end, all the Star Destroyer scenes, pretty much all the main action scenes.

And then Vader rolls in at the end and does the best SW scene by far in the entire series. Well, maybe that's stretching it, Vader vs Luke in ESB and Vader killing the Emp are probably the best scenes overall, but this hallway scene was right up there. Too bad it was only one minute long.

Aside from all that good stuff though, I did find the pacing to be a little off and the development to be not the greatest. It was the mindless fanfare stuff that I enjoyed the most, although explaining why the Death Star had it's sh!tty flaw was a great idea.

I'd say on its own it's like a 7/10 movie, pretty good, but, the fanservice brings it up to an easy 9/10 just for enjoyment.
