So why is 'Attack of the Clones' more hated than 'The Phantom Menace'?

Even though 'Attack of the Clones' has better reviews than 'The Phantom Menace' in general (even if that's not saying much), it seems that a lot of people seem to think that the former is worse than the latter.

Why do you think this is? I mean, I saw both films (obviously), and felt that the former was slightly better than the latter.

I have a feeling that this might be because the latter is a worse film overall but the former is easier to hate.

I don't know, I think Phantom Menace is worse. Probably because of Hayden/Anakin.

I love both but i guess the difference is a lot of didn't like Hayden Christensen's performance i thought he did pretty good personally

The love story.

I met Hayden about 6 or 7 years ago. He is the most kind and humble person, and very handsome. Its a shame that he is so disliked cause he is so nice

I am not at all ashamed to admit he's my favorite modern actor. His acting style reminds me a lot of the late great Lon Chaney Jr., and that's a MASSIVE compliment coming from me. Writing a screenplay for a horror romance werewolf film in the style of those old Universal Classics and Hayden would basically be my dream actor to play the lead character.

I last watched TPM about 2-3yrs ago, & its final ground battle was awful. Giant cg goofballs battling silly droids with giant cg blue balls.

Love story? Those are segues in AOTC. Obi-Wan's side story & action are good, & the visuals are pretty solid. Dooku is solid.
AOTC is comfortably better than TPM.

Which goes back to my theory that 'Attack of the Clones' is easier to hate than 'The Phantom Menace' due to that love story simply because it was so cringeworthy.

No way. GunGuns & Jar Jar trump any sandy love story bs for badness.

Terrible lead performances and it's actually more contradictory to established continuity.

Well for me personally, I think The Phantom Menace despite all of its flaws is still a watchable and moderately entertaining film. I can't say the same thing about Attack of the Clones.

The awful, awful romance scenes are probably the main reason. As for me, I have it rated one point lower (2 vs 3) but really they're both just so completely devoid of value that it's pretty meaningless to nitpick between them.

Phantom Menace had Liam NEEsons and Darth MAuls!....HHow anyone can think Attack of the Clones is better is beyond me.

Beats me. I thought "Attack of the Clones" was an underrated masterpiece. I even loved the romance lol. Only Star Wars movies better than it were "Empire" and "Revenge."

I find Phantom Menace about as bad as everyone says, but I don't really mind Ep. II. The romantic scenes don't work, but I like Yoda's fight, Obi-Wan playing detective, the locations/world building, and Natalie Portman's abs. II and III have their problems but are still better than the overwhelming majority of the dreck that populates today's summer movie seasons.

When it came out it was considered a step up and a welcome addition after the disappointment of The Phantom Menace.

It still holds a positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and people loved the Yoda lightsaber scene when they saw it in 2002.

It could be the digital photography, which was clearly being tried out before it was even close to ready. I'm not saying this is anyone's conscious reason, but the shoddy look is bound to colour perceptions of the film, especially among those who saw it on the big screen.

That aside, it's a question of which particular kind of awfulness bugs you the most. Jar Jar binks? The headache-inducing four-way mess of a conclusion with its, "Oops, silly me, accidentally saved the day" moments? Terrible child acting? Then you'll hate The Phantom Menace more. Fanfic-level romance writing? Petulant adolescents? Scenes that have nothing whatever to do with one another? Then Attack of the Clones will be your bête noire.

That was my first guess, 35 mm vs 1080p early 2000's digital camera is a big step down, Phantom Menace had some beautiful colorful moment in it. And the step down is there at every frame of the movie, it must add up to a really significant amount.

Who said it was more hated? Fat neckbearded hater douchebags on the internet? Who gives a *beep* what they say? Attack of the Clones was a sequel that improved on the previous film. Go ask people who are actual fans, not neckbeard bandwagon morons online.

Attack of the Clones is CGI overload. It feels like your watching a cartoon.

'Cause it's worse. The only major improvement is that it has less Jar Jar Binks, but the dialogue is worse, the story is even more boring, and there's just as plenty of cringe-inducing moments. That said, at least it advanced the story (even though it did it badly), whereas TPM just really went nowhere in the grand scheme of things.

Two words - Hayden Christensen - he had a few good acting moments in the film, notably his mother's death scene, but aside fromt that he's pretty terrible. That and the dialogue he was given is more "child having a tantrum" than the conflicted soul and good friend he's supposed to be. He's serviceable to the story at large, but there are still so many bad moments in that film. I can't think of ever seeing a love story so poorly done, unless Lucas was trolling, but in a way I think it works in showing how the rigid values of society can produce such a corrupted version of love and friendship. All of the characters in that film never really seem like friends in the same way the characters in the original trilogy, living bare bones, on the run under an oppressive regime in the collapsed remains of a previous society do. There are no codes or morals or ethics in place there, just necessity and survival. So Lucas may have made the love story crap deliberately. And the "friendship" between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Really most of the characters in that film are portrayed as total douchebags, especially the Jedi, so it's no wonder someone goes postal eventually and that society becomes a dictatorship. There's a logic to the whole trilogy that the nitpickers miss out on because they're too busy complaining about every small detail and "how does this work?"

The Phantom Menace is still my favourite out of the lot of them, the whole saga, for personal reasons, as I was young when it was being hyped up and I enjoyed the merchandise, games, and the film itself, though I only really came to appreciate the film alone recently. I'd still rather watch any of the original trilogy or The Phantom Menace than Attack of the Clones, or even Revenge of the Sith, for the reasons above, not because they are bad films, but because I actually like the characters, mostly. The Force Awakens I've yet to revisit, I didn't think it was great at first but it might grow on me.

You ate the good food and good drinks (the Original Trilogy), but then it was inevitable after such great foods and drinks, you had to go to the bathroom....

And after alot of build up - you finally got what you knew was coming, the poop and pee.....

TPM is like the poop. It was just messy.

AOTC is like the piss. It came out, didn't smell as bad, but it was def toxic.

The romance is what makes AOTC worse for me, ugh. Not to mention that people didn't have as much hype for AOTC, so opinions were generally unanticipated.

Just being around her again is... intoxicating.

Does it really matter though? All 3 prequels suck gigantic elephant balls.

I think it's because of Empire Strikes Back.
People understood that the first movie of every SW trilogy is always the most childish, but they expected something more from the second one.
And Hayden Christensen.
