Is Brazil a masterpiece?

It is very underrated, but it doesn't help that it is quite a downbeat film with darker tones than most audiences members are comfortable with.

What does being "quite a downbeat film with darker tones than most audience members are comfortable with" have to do with not being a masterpiece?

None with being a masterpiece but it does make is underrated because most people will struggle to stick with it. It's certainly a film I'd think about before recommending it to someone who I wasn't sure would like it. Unlike A clockwork orange which is also dark and bleak, but Kubrick Is the master and managed to make a very dark film accessible to a larger audience by using themes that were easier to follow. I personally would put it on the edge of being a masterpiece and very good film, it's not quite the level of ACWO but it is a work of very fine art.

It's funnier you mentioned it, cause I just watched Brazil, but had trouble getting through it, as I found it to be very confusing and frustrating. So I haven't seen the ending.

It rides the line between bizarre masterpiece, and pretentious crap. There are a lot of over the top scenes, where if you cut then, seem like it doesn't even matter, yet those scenes are interesting. It is a series of odd shenanigans, that's for sure.

Don't consider it a masterpiece, but it's very good

Great film, not quite masterpiece level in my eyes but definitely in the upper tier of what I've seen. I wasn't a huge fan of Greist in it.

Yes. Next stupid question?
8 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 19:19
I think its a very overrated film personally
9 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 19:31
It's highly regarded, arguably, as Gilliam's best, but it wouldn't make my Top 5 from his resume, honestly.

01. Time Bandits
02. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
03. The Fisher King
04. 12 Monkeys
05. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

For that matter, I'd even rank it behind the similar The Zero Theorem. It is a 'great work' to be sure. My biggest hurtle with it is that I've always found Jonathan Pryce rather insufferable. Sorry, I just do, particularly here as the lead.

Nah overrated. I like it when they shave but still leave a little something there like a lil triangle just above
11 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 20:30
Well the village idiot has weighed in and called it "dull", so now we all know it's a masterpiece.

It is very underrated

It's in the top ten English language movies of the entire 1980s over at tspdt. It has a 98%/8.6 rating at Rotten Tomatoes. 88 at Metacritic. And even 8.0 at the fanboy-heaven that is imdb.

I'd hardly call that underrated :)
13 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 20:48
Fair point. I never actually checked its rating. But It just doesn't get the same following regardless of rating. 12 monkeys has the same rating, yet if you spoke to people at random, most will have never heard of Brazil. I like 12 monkeys but prefer Brazil fir the record.
14 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:02
same rating where? Ah you mean on imdb? Fair enough then.

I mean it's nowhere near the acclaim on all the other sites I mentioned. If you actually mean underseen, then sure - lots of more artsy movies are underseen by the masses, and us fanboy types hehe.

And again - we're on fanboy heaven here so Nolan, Fincher, Tarantino etc are extremely loved here (by me as well). No surprise imo

I really like both movies btw, but tbh almost feel Brazil is slightly overrated overall. It's not in my top 10 of the 80s even if the 80s was a crap decade for English language movies imho :)

Are you an adult?
16 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:23
Do you have anything of substance to say or just some bullshit?
17 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:27
Just wondering if u r or were when u saw it. U might change your mind as an adult since u seem bright. It's a brilliant movie more important and amusing than ever.
18 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:30
I was in my early 20's when I first saw it, 31 when I saw it last
19 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:31
Sad
20 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:45
Why?
21 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 21:58
I had hope for you
22 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 22:12
With what? That I would share your opinion?

I had more hope that we could have an actual conversation about movies here, but you haven't said anything about the movie or why you think that it's so good.

Is that your writing or someone else's? If it's someone else's then what's the point of even linking to it?
25 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 22:31
Why not? It's not great writing, but he makes good points and I don't feel like w-w-w-wasting any more time on this exchange.
26 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 22:41
Because I asked you to share your thoughts. Sharing the thoughts of someone else is not the same thing. You talk a lot and say nothing, so I thought maybe you'd change when it was dealing with a film that you apparently think is great. Sad to see that that's not the case.
27 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 22:51
He's just trolling, that's all he's been doing. I'm surprised you're wasting your time on him.
28 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 23:02
I couldn't sleep and the board was slow. You're right I should be better than that, but circumstances dictated such behavior. I'm not proud of it.
29 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 23:13
We all fall down from time to time.
30 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 23:17
Not trolling, just amazed that so many self proclaimed film lovers dislike one of the greatest films of the twentieth century. It's disgusting, disheartening and sad.
31 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-08 23:27
Brazil has always been polarizing. But you are right about "when you saw it and where" since in the 80's in the United States, there were some alternate versions going around on tv, which radically changed the story, or something like that.
32 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 00:03
I was also drunk last night and not ready to go into detail. It's inspirations are obviously 1984 filtered through Gilliam's sensibilities, but the extra layers of detail that seemed far fetched at the time now resonate deeply. Obsessions with standards of beauty, the use of terrorism as a government mind-control device, bureaucracy that is taken to levels of absurdity and can result in the incarceration of innocents, etc.

It's now like a prescient, darkly comedic version of our modern world. Also, it's fking fun, regardless of what idiots like slovak say.

Damn, I respond properly and nobody cares. I respond like an ass hole, and everyone's all over it.
34 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 02:30
I hated it and gave away my dvd. I only bought it since it came so highly recommended.
35 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 03:14
Moron
36 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 06:06
I think it's great. I think since you like it so much you should check out the movie that inspired it; The War of the Worlds: Next Century (1981). It's just as good. The only hurdle you'll find is one of language since it's in Polish.
37 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 09:56
It is very underrated

What???

It's highly rated for reasons unknown to me.

Barely watchable.

3/10

Jesus this place is filled with absolute morons. Barely watchable? Go fk yourself.
39 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-09 13:47
You really don't seem to have a conception of what "underrated" means. As has been pointed out it's very highly rated across the board - it's even been on the top 250 film lists from time to time up there with such undisputed masterpieces as The Help .

At any rate, my own opinion is that it's a great film, second only to Munchausen among the director's works, and one of the great dystopian films in history.

Yes, it deserves to be considered alongside Zamyatin's We.
