I'm not a star wars fan but I have seen, own and have enjoyed the films.

but correct me if i'm wrong ( nicely please ). but isnt' there a running theme in the trilogies:

a mentor character is killed in the first film of the trilogies
Ep.1 - Qui - gon Jinn.
Ep.4 - Ben Kenobi.
Ep.7 - Han Solo.

and the turning of a character in the third

Ep.3 - Anakin from good to bad
Ep.6 - Darth Vader Bad to good
Ep.9 - Hasen't been made yet but should we expect a turn?

A romance of main characters in the Second film.

Ep.2 - the relationship of Anakin and Padme.
Ep.5 - the relationship of Han and Leia.
Ep.8 - Guessing? a relationship for Rey and Finn.

Anyone see other recurring themes or suspect some?

I am hoping that is not the case. I loved the force awakens i thought it blended elements of the previous films together that were good and worked for the story. Your onto something and i hope your wrong. I hope episode eight surprises us.

You're right the Star Wars saga is cyclical in nature and in more ways than just what you have noted. It remains to be seen in what form that nature continues to be the case. Maybe I will end up being in error on this point but I suspect that there will not be a romance in Episode VIII.

As I understand it, unlike previous trilogies, the second film will pick up almost exactly from where the first left off. Rey will be with Luke, so I don't think she will have any opportunity to develop a romantic relationship with Finn or even Kylo. I think that Rey will end up being the younger sister or cousin of Kylo, my suspicion is that it will be sister, so romance is out of the question either way.

But that doesn't mean that no relationships will develop in Episode VIII. I'd wager friendships are created or continue to develop. One being the Master/Apprentice relationship between Luke and Rey.

Regarding other standout recurring themes:

Major weapons of the antagonists destroyed in the first film of a trilogy.

Ep. I - Droid Control ship blockading Naboo.
Ep. IV - The 1st Death Star.
Ep. VII - The Star Killer.

Antagonists suffering a defeat in the first film.

Ep. I - Invasion and blockade of Naboo thwarted.
Ep. IV - Death Star destroyed.
Ep. VII - Star Killer base destroyed.

Antagonists gaining a victory even in defeat:

Ep. I - Palpatine becomes Chancellor of the Republic.
Ep. IV - Alderaan destroyed.
Ep. VII - New Republic capital (Hosnian Prime), large portion of their fleet, and (perhaps) the government is destroyed.

Who did Han mentor in 7?

Well He didn't get a chance to pass on much but I whould say he Mentored Rey & Finn.

I would. Brief as their relationship was, Han was still a mentor figure to Rey.
