Guy we need a Star Trek, a mega Star Trek with your help we can make this happen, so here goes, first question.

TOS Enterprise

1) How old is the ship? In the Cage the crew and ship has been in service for a while...it gets refitted before TMP and ultimately destroyed in TSFS, so how long was she in service for? Was that length of time considered normal for starfleet?

2) is there any fiction set during this time? Captain Pike, Dr Boyce, Majel as 'number one'? etc I'd be amazed if there wasn't given the large amount of different series available in Trek fiction, but can't recall ever seeing any...!

By the Prime (real) timeline the ship was built in 2245. Capt. Robert April took the first 5 year mission. Then it was Capt. Pike. The Cage (The Pike episode) happened in 2254. Kirk takes the ship in 2265. Search for Spock was in 2285.

The ship was around for 40 years. Which I think is about normal in Star Fleet.

Yes there is Pike fiction. Here's an example.

Star Trek: The Captain's Table #6: Christopher Pike: Where Sea Meets Sky

Wow, thanks bud. I guess 40 years sounds about right. I looked up that Pike/Captains table book, I vaguely remember when the first one came out but I never read any in the series.

Final Frontier and Best Destiny are two you want to get your hands on.
Final Frontier tells the story of the Enterprise's first mission(actually in the beginning the ship hasn't even been named yet) under Captain April, with CDR George Samuel KIRK Sr. as XO. Best Destiny is a sequel, only a teenage, pre Academy James T. Kirk is along for the adventure.

Cool, I'll look them up, thanks.

did you ever get to watch the original pilot with the late Jeffrey Hunter? not the one where spock was on trial but the full episode? if you didn't this link is directly starts the episode. it also has a commentary by the late gene Roddenberry just before it starts. http://vodlocker.com/pxhdcamg7mn3

I had it on VHS from the late 90's so I've seen it quite a bit, but there was no introduction though so I'll have a look, good find!

Just found original series of Star Trek on Netflix and watching with my parents. My question, is have they added new computer graphics to the show? The scenes outside the ship look so much more modern/ updated than the scenes inside the ship or on the planet.

The entire show was remastered about 8 or 9 years ago. The Enterprise, all space scenes, alien planets, phaser beams, computer screen readouts, etc......were all redone. (There are videos floating around out there that have split screens comparing the old to the new if that's of interest to you).

Some trekkers prefer the old look, but I prefer the remastered look. It's not the best, but I love seeing the visuals of The Enterprise.

Thank you!! I think I would prefer it the original look, but I can tell it really "pops" the planets and ships from the background.

i was watching metv saturday the 3rd and they were showing a commercial about honoring star trek's 50th anniversary starting september 6th at 1 am et (its really sunday morning when it starts). they are going to show time tunnel and land of the giants, episode of lost in space and voyage to the bottom of the sea, after time tunnel then after voyage then its planet of the apes tv series. i did see something about showing the original trek pilot with jeffrey hunter was in it with majel as first officer and nimoy as the science officer. if this is true this as far as i know of, the first time ever they showed it on tv. i have seen it online and when i bought trek series where they had 2 episodes of it on dvd, had the last trek episode turnabout intruder with 2 different ways of the pilot.

when they did the episode where they were going to have a court martial hearing against spock they only showed parts of it. the pilot has a different ending than the one in the court martial one.

SEPT 6, 1966 IS WHEN STAR TREK WAS ON TV ON NBC AND THANKS TO DESILU IT GOT A BREAK THANKS TO LUCILLE BALL CAUSE SHE LIKE THE SHOW. i heard this in some documentary on tv when they were doing something about star trek.

The original pilot was "The Cage", which was latter pieced in to the only
two-parter, "The Menagerie". NBC didn't like it, but authorized a second pilot,
"Where No Man Has Gone Before". Then it gets kind of weird, because in stead of airing the second pilot as the first episode, they show two other episodes first. Fun Fact: Currently, CBS holds the rights to Star Trek, but when Gene Roddenberry pitched it to them, they turned it down because they'd already bought "Lost In Space" two weeks earlier.

yes i know cbs owns the rights but i have several sites that shows tv shows and one of them is they have all 5 series to watch and they are free. yes i know the pilot episode was called the cage cause when i was buying some dvds from best buy 20 years ago,i was looking at the one that had the very last episode of star trek, the turnabout intruder and with it there was 2 of the same pilot with jeffrey hunter did. one had a commmentary by gene roddenberry talking about the pilot and in it it was part b&w and color cause some of the parts were destroyed or something and the other one was just the episode all in color. so they never did show anyone at all over the years, i at least got to see it on dvd. so when ever metv shows it, i figure everyone who hasn't yet will see it for the first time. if anyone wants to see it you can do a search or i have www.vidics.ch and http://the-watch-series.to/ has it and look under season 1 episode 0.

When they were filming the Kirk/Mitchell fight scene in the second pilot, Lucille Ball was on set with a broom helping wrangle the sand.

if this is true this as far as i know of, the first time ever they showed it on tv.

The Cage was first shown on TV in its entirety in October, 1986 during the 20th Anniversary year. I have seen it shown a few times since then, but it is not regularly shown in syndication with the Star Trek reruns because the cast was so much different.

The Cage first airing in 1986 is why IMDb lists Leonard Nimoy as having been in Star Trek(1966) from 1966 to 1986.

Leonard Nimoy ... Mr. Spock / ... (80 episodes, 1966-1986)

Majel Barrett is also listed as 1966-1986 on the Star Trek(1966) page, even though she played a different character in The Cage than she did in the rest of the original series.

Majel Barrett ... Nurse Chapel / ... (35 episodes, 1966-1986)

Star Trek (1966)

The Voyage home.

So does the object from Star Trek IV with the whales supposed to have another Whale inside it trying to contact Earths whales or is it just a probe?😕

It's just a probe of unknown origin.
