His films are heavy in action but he doesn't condescend to the audience, there's an intelligence in his films. A film like The Long Riders isn't limited to the gimmick of casting brothers, it tells a narrative with care. And Wild Bill is a movie which took risks. Instead of being a straight-up Western, Walter Hill chose to go for a more mournful, dramatic tone.
I'm not a particular fan of The Driver, however I admire the chase scenes and the way he directed Ryan O'Neal, his best work, and Isabelle Adjani.
