Han Solo is confirmed to be a lead character in EP VII

The amount of screentime the Skywalker twins may get is still unclear, although Luke’s fate is obviously a key factor. Ford’s Han Solo, however, will be one of the leads, piloting the Millennium Falcon alongside his old pal Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew.) Among the newcomers, desert scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley) and runaway stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) will be running for their lives, with the rolling droid BB-8 trying to keep up. Eventually all five of them end up aboard that familiar starship.

So I guess that mean Luke and Leia will be unleaded.

I'm sure Luke will have a bigger role in Episode 8. Most rumors say he is barely in 7.

According to Kylo_Ren/Face_Palm, an upcoming episode of that silly cartoon, Star Wars:Rebels will explain how Luke and Leia got unleaded.

I thought this movie was supposed to be about the new characters.

A New Hope focused on Luke/Han/Leia but Obi-Wan was still a lead character in the film.
It looks like Han is taking that role for The Force Awakens.

Luke Skywalker was the hero of the original trilogy, not Han Solo. Luke should be the lead before Solo.
The makers of this new film are letting Harrison Ford's popularity as both Indiana Jones and Han Solo (plus his overall star power) dictate his involvment in this film, rather than the story dictating the characters. The star wars story was always about Luke Skywalker first and foremost.
This movie's gonna be a bust. I saw Star Wars in 77 as a young kid - my earliest memory. So I know my shit. 'The Force Awakens' is nothing but fanboy service with a feminist agenda (a female lead? WTF?). PC Wars. Fuck this movie.

Yeah, I agree that the story should dictate the characters. Ford shouldn't be the main character out of pandering or fan service. If this story is about the new characters, then they should be given preferential treatment.

How do you know the better story isn't holding Luke back at first to give him a spectacular story later?

But Han has always been much more popular then Luke.

>>12That should not make him the protagonist. It is obvious that this film pander to the hoi polloi rather than captivate us with the same atmosphere as the original film. If you watch the original film, there would be beautiful atmosphere of wisdom, but here it will be a stupid action film pandered to the mainstream sheep known as the hoi polloi.

My thoughts are this sounds great. As for holding Luke back for a later Episode that makes perfect sense he was the "original" hero but not the most popular star, hence Harrison Ford's Solo getting the top billing there. However later on Luke HAS to be the lead he is a very important character not just in Star Wars but in pop culture and they must use him right.
