Jake Gyllenhaal not only carries this movie, he elevates it. His character is almost un-watchable, yet you can't take your eyes away. He's despicable, a man of no character or ethics, who will do anything it takes to achieve his goals. He talks like a self-help guru at a gathering for young capitalists. All contact he engages in is some kind of negotiation - even sex. Those the movie chooses to cross his path are hardly different: self-centered and voracious.

So, why watch something so void of humanity? Because that's the point. It's an obvious slight and critique on sensational media, greedy business practices, and capitalism. It's brilliantly written. And, you need to watch this for Jake Gyllenhaal. There's a scene towards the end where he is interrogated, and after the cop leaves the room he looks straight into the surveillance camera. The look he gives is one of the creepiest damn things I've seen, more so than most horror movies.
