why are a lot of films not available on bluray?

I am updating my film collection and a lot of times I have to buy dvd's instead of blurays because a lot of titles simply aren't available on bluray.

Anyone have the same problem?

some examples of films that are not on bluray (at least not where I live)

pope of Greenwich village
breathless (richard gere remake)
the edge
the negotiator
red eye
the man who wasn't there
days of heaven
a simple plan
badlands
a civil action
at close range
blood simple
Ed Wood
first snow
the salton sea
kiss of death
just cause
revenge (Costner)
my own private Idaho
red rock west
the killer (john Woo)

Matchstick Men, which is outrageous because it looks fantastic and would really benefit from it.

The Abyss and True Lies are big examples.

THE ABYSS? Why would that not be on blu-ray yet?

It hasn't yet even though it should have by now. People are putting the blame either on James Cameron or 20th Century Fox or both. There's been no official reason for the long delay. The closest thing we have right now to the Blu-ray is the remastered HDTV theatrical cut that's been playing on Cinemax and HBO.

Restorations cost money.

Blu Ray was an in-between format.

It was a huge upgrade in picture quality from DVD, and it helped pave the way for the new Digital HD format.

Disks will quietly be made less and less just like tapes before them.

so in the near future we have to upgrade from bluray to hd format? I hope that's not true.
