It was a product of it's time but it's still great. Saying it's "not actually that good" is just a bit laughable. It kinda revolutionized film making and inspired many other greats.

If you went to Comic-Con and asked 100 random people if they liked Citizen Kane, do you think that would be a good indicator of how good the film is? People have personal preferences that often overtake their objective opinion of a film. A film doesn't have to be a 10 but it sure as heck shouldn't be a 1 just because it's not the kind of film you don't usually watch/like.

I've only ever met one person in real life who did not like it, and a few who claimed it to be 'fair', but most loved it. It's definitely not 'just a product of its time'.

i think people only praise it because "it was ahead of it's time" more than just being a great movie to this day.

i always judge movies based on how much they interest/entertain me and the further they get away from that the lower the rating.

p.s. for the record... i have not rated Citizen Kane but i did see about the first 20min of it and based on that it was not looking good to say the least as if it did not get better within the next 20minutes beyond what i seen i would have likely called it failure/boring and gave it a 3/10 MAX.

That's nonsense. It continues to entertain to this day, at least most who watch it.

Well, I'm a HUGE fan of classics, but Citizen Kane just didn't do it for me.

Everyone that I know, none of which are film geeks, all think it's good but don't understand why it's said to be the greatest movie ever made. They'd prefer Casablanca or The Godfather or something to have that title.

It has always mostly been seen as a landmark of production design, editing, directing, lighting, etc.

I would say that most people who've seen it probably land in that category, as much today as when it came out (it did get plenty of reviews noting that it's mostly lush eye candy).

There are definitely people who like the narrative and the story, but I found it quite dull. I think Welles was more in love with a story concept focusing on a single-minded powerful juggernaut type of person, similarly to how he saw himself.

I think Welles was more in love with what he could do with the technology. The story itself is cold and clinical and really not that interesting.
