Wow, The Truman Show!

I have no idea why it has taken me until now to see this film. I watched it last night and cannot get it out of my head, such a wonderful, imaginative movie.

Truman is a man whose life is a fake one... The place he lives is in fact a big studio with hidden cameras everywhere, and all his friends and people around him, are actors who play their roles in the most popular TV-series in the world: The Truman Show. Truman thinks that he is an ordinary man with an ordinary life and has no idea about how he is exploited. Until one day... he finds out everything.

I felt so sad when I realised what happened to him and was continuing to happen, Carrey and Laura Linney gave amazing performances, I was quite shocked to find it was Ed Harris who was nominated for the Oscar.

This film just entertained me from start to finish, I laughed, I cried and I want to thank Peter Weir and all involved in making such a great movie....Sorry I came a little late to the party.

Surprised it took you so long to see the film, honestly. I actually finally watched TTS from start to finish, last year.

Yeah, it's a pretty amazing movie, and it really makes you, what if your life was one whole lie, what would you do? Honestly, I'd punch a hole, hoping that I'd able to escape from whatever reality I've forced into.

I'm not surprised that Carrey wasn't nominated, even though I'm disappointed. The academy seems to hate him from some reason. They're constantly snubbing him. Well, at least he won a Golden Globe, and has done superb dramatic work since then.

Yes, it makes you think 'what would I do in that situation?', quite scary.

I'm glad he got some recognition, glad you rate him too.

Yup. I just hope my alien sheep overlords take kindly to me destroying the paradise they put me in.

Wow, I'm a little surprised you hadn't seen it yet. It's one of my favorites films of the 1990s.

I really wish a sequel of some kind could have been made, merely so we could find out what happens to him.

I know I don't understand why it passed me by.

The ending was one of the best I've ever seen.
I hoped he met up with Lauren/Sylvia and she helped him adjust to the real world.

I've always figured he'd have been able to mount a huge lawsuit for wrongful imprisonment or something against the television studio.
8 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 21:56
Yes, probably.
9 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 21:58
I know I would have!
10 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:01
We have millions of CCTV cameras and he'd feel right at home.
11 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:04
Glad you saw it. The first time I saw it was in middle school when we were learning about society. I loved it, my favorite Jim Carrey movie.
12 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:06
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and rate Carrey too.

Have you seen 'I Love You Philip Morris'? I loved Carrey in this too.
13 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:08
No, but I've seen the trailer. It's a true story, right?
14 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:10
Yes it's based on true events that happened to con-artist Steven Russell.

Have you seen 'I Love You Philip Morris'? I loved Carrey in this too.

I remember that movie being in production, but it just kinda came and went without any fanfare. It looked interesting.

It's worth a look, anon. I've seen it twice now and love it.
17 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:16
Yeah, arguably Carrey's best work(and he has done many excellent things). A well-traveled metaphor for loss of innocence done with a contemporary reality T.V. twist(which was just beginning to really infest the world when "Truman" was released).

Well said, that's so true.
19 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:20
I've always loved it. It might even be my favorite movie. I don't know.
20 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:22
Hi, same here, it has certainly jumped into my favourite movie list.
21 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:24
It really is amazing.

When I saw it in the theater, I had to wait for everyone to leave before I would, because I cried so hard during the ending.

Still, it's unfortunate that I never really remember the movie until someone brings it up. I guess it's because the concept itself is too much of a gimmick, but the humanism and the emotion really push it to great heights.

That is so cool that it affected you so much, anon.

Your last sentence sums it up well.

Movies that have made me BAWL:

The Truman Show
The Incredibles
The Iron Giant (very hard to watch the climax)
Sommersby (the only one that actually seems fitting for this list! Also the first movie to ever make me cry)

Good movies..

I cried at The Elephant Man trailer, and have never watched the film, I would crumble in heap.
25 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:32
I loved it too, it's as entertaining and it is thought-provoking. What was your favorite scene?
26 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:34
Glad you enjoyed it too.

Spoilers.

Tough to pick a favourite scene, so many I liked, the last scene where he climbed the stairs and left was so emotional. I thought the scene where he tried to mix things up and went in the other building and saw the backroom to the fake elevator was so tense.

What was yours?

I saw it in the theater and it definitely made an impression. At the end when he's speaking to the booming voice and questions who he is: "I am the creator..." I was like Why, you pompous sonofabitch! but then he went on "...of a television show that gives hope and joy and inspiration to millions." Good film.
29 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:40
Cool, so glad you liked it, I'm a little envious that you saw it at the theater.
30 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:42
Loved it as well. Best part is without a doubt the soundtrack by Philip Glass.
31 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:44
Yes, good call, I neglected to mention the music.
32 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:46
Indeed, it's a remarkable film, and further solidifies Weir's incredible diversity as a filmmaker. And as much as people give credit to Andrew Niccol for writing the film, let's not forget that Weir had an instrumental process in further developing and changing some key ideas, too.
33 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:48
Yes good call, anon. Weir did an excellent job.
34 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:50
It was the first movie that made me appreciate Jim Carrey for more than his comedic value. I like it a lot.
35 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:52
Cool, yes he really was great as Truman.
36 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:54
It really is a tremendous movie that is too little talked about. It's the only thing Andrew Niccol has been involved with that I felt delivered from start to finish, and I give a lot of that credit to Peter Weir, one of the least appreciated of great directors. Jim Carrey should've had an Oscar nomination at the very least, if not the win that year (especially since that was a fairly weak year, Roberto Benigni won after all).

Coincidentally, I just watched Siskel and Ebert's review on YouTube yesterday. Made me want to revisit this brilliant movie. Glad you liked it Jana!

The Truman Show is one of the very best movies ever made. Jim Carrey and Ed Harris' best peformances easily.
38 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 22:58
One of my favorite movies, glad you liked it.
39 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 23:00
Better late than never jana. Great movie.
40 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 23:02
One of my favorites of the '90s, for sure. Not sure why I have it rated only at a 9 right now, I thought I bumped it up after my most recent viewing a few months back. It's a 10 for sure. I have yet to be let down by a Peter Weir film that I've seen.
41 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 23:06
Peter Weir's best. Even with Jim Carrey, who was superb this time. At least you finally got to see it, which must be better than not seeing at all.
42 Name: Anonymous : 2015-08-05 23:09
I'd say it's probably the best film Carrey has ever starred in. It is a delight to watch.
