Because he'd have to if he wants to convince anybody Spielberg is better than Nolan. Mentioning movies like Minority Report and War Of The Wolrd is going to hurt his case more than anything.

I don't believe he was trying to convince anybody. Either you're able to see for yourself or you're not. Fact is, Spielberg's Duel is better than the whole Nolan lumped together.

Munich is better than most Nolan films...

War of the Worlds is kinda underrated. It's certainly in my top 5 favourite Spielberg films. Munch is pretty weak though. He's always been uneven with purely dramatic pieces. Going back to Nolan I'd love to see him make a pure drama.

In terms of stature, probably yeah. More in line with Spielberg since Cameron makes a movie once every 10 years these days. An even better comparison to Spielberg would be Hitchcock as he makes mostly thrillers that are also huge event blockbusters.

Nolan at his very best (The Dark Knight) is in the same league as Cameron and Spielberg at their very best.

Not all of his films are all that great though.

No. Imo Nolan is the new Richard Fleischer. Huge blockbusters with fantastical stories who get good critical acclaim and lots of Oscar noms and especially winning vfx oscar several times.

Spielberg is a master of wonder and of visual storytelling. Cameron is a master of film structure and of visual flair in set pieces. Nolan, apart from the Paprika copied hallway scene, is none of that. Imo he is better at more intimate scenes/stories. I wish he would go back to smaller films since I adore Memento and like The Prestige and Insomnia a lot.

Nolan does a variety of films, can do a sci fi thriller like inception, a comic book movie that is oscar worthy, sci fi drama - spielberg is a little more grounded with his dramas, schindler's list, munich, saving pvt ryan, lincoln - etc....

JJ Abrams is the action sci fi master filmmaker...Star Trek, now Star Wars.. Super 8.. Does the monsters & alien movies like Cloverfield...Cameron was the king of aliens & robot movies. Terminator, Aliens, Abyss. But also could put out True Lies like Abrams did w/ MI 3, only MI 3 kinda sucked....

Overall, Spielberg / Cameron are still way above Nolan / JJ Abrams, in my opinion...

JJ & Nolan directed an already established franchise to put themselves as Hollywood's best current directors. JJ did Star Trek & Star Wars. While Nolan did Batman. They were already established franchises.

Cameron WROTE and started an entire franchise himself with Terminator. And he expanded the Alien universe and actually made a better film than the first, a very rare movie occurrence. Spielberg started Indiana Jones franchise which still reigns absolutely supreme...And lets not also forget he launched Jurassic Park in 1993 which we've just seen the sequel have the highest opening weekend ever.

So JJ / Nolan got handed franchise films , where as Spielberg / Cameron created their own franchises.

For years he has always had another project in the works. Now, nothing.

He took too much inspiration and direction from Shyamalan and Lucas, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure he will follow a similar path now.
