Like you're one of those people that will keep watching until the end, but you lose interest in the tale, so you figure, hey, a good compromise is "Okay, I will keep watching BUT I'm going to go 'on strike' with the subtitles," or maybe not stop reading them altogether but only read about one line for every five or ten displayed.

I did this recently during a viewing of Yasujiro Ozu's Autumn Afternoon (1962). I guit reading the subtitles about thirty minutes in and sat there and watched the pictures, bobbing my head in mock understanding until the end.

No except in the sense that I have been so wrapped up in the film that I forgot I was reading titles. I have occasionally held a memory of the actors speaking English even though I knew they weren't. It is just that the language of the film and of the titles merged unconsciously.

That's why I like Italian films. If I happen to zone out for a while, I can pretty much rest assured that all I missed was some "Ehhh!"s and "Ohh!"s and a couple of "buongiorno"s.
