First, the Van Damme vehicle:

It doesn't know whether it wants to be a science fiction film by the way of a typical Van Damme movie or the other way around. Ultimately it ended up being unsatisfactory on both counts to me. Poor science, plot holes galore, extremely crappy acting (not just from JCVD but even from better actors like Ron Silver) even the fighting scenes are nowhere as well-choreographed as those in better JCVD vehicles like Universal Soldier or Hard Target. I did like the 1931 fight where JCVD displays his famous "reverse somersault over the ceiling" stunt.

Now, the maligned-in-comparison made for TV sequel:

It has Jason Scott Lee versus Thomas Ian Griffith instead of JCVD versus Silver. Neither of them are great actors but they tried this time and pulled it off to my satisfaction. JSL displays emotions better than his predecessor, can deliver his lines with a lot more conviction and finesse and is also a competent fighter to boot. TIG has had experience playing villains in B-movies and does well here. Effort is made to make his character more than just a one-dimensional villain (unlike Silver's) which is a welcome change. It is also better paced than the earlier film and maybe that is why the plot holes did not jump out at me immediately as they did back then.

An enjoyable film, this. Take my word for it and please go see it. The current rating ought to be the work of butthurt JCVD fans.

Berlin Decision was shit, simple as that... But the first one wasn't very memorable either, I only recall a virtual sexuality scene the rest I've forgotten.

They were both good, and so was the 1997 TV series.

Haven't seen the sequel but yeah I agree the first is the worst Van Damme movie where he is the leading role. I don't know how this ended up being his biggest hit at the box office, must have been a few people were impressed by his other movies on video and rushed to see this in the cinema.
