Upon watching the Great Gatsby something gnawed on me, It was only after I watched American beauty that I realised what it was.
These films both have in common that they revolve around the same concept, two young lovers split up and eventually the girl marries a very wealthy, successful and handsome man.
after losing the love of his life, the guy moves tries to move on but never can.
Eventually they meet again and the girl gives in to her old love and decides to cheat on her husband.
While two guys both honestly love her, she chooses to be indecisive in her commitment and hurts everyone in the process.
The problem in these films lay in the fact that the girl never takes any responsibility for this. They never pay for the consequences but lives happy ever after, leaving either one or both male characters scarred in the dust.
It's almost as if these films are merely made to portray the female wet-dream of a dramatic love life. I find that these films have utter disgusting morals, because what it does is portray that it's completely acceptable to be that kind of girl.
If a man were to do that, he’d have to go through dust, crawl on his knees and beg for forgiveness to win her back.
Does she take responsibility? Does she feel sorry for them? No, she feels sorry for herself because she is uncomfortable. It would be fine if any girl character apologised to anyone in these films, but I've yet to hear any.
Why is there such a double moral standard for this in films? I'm utterly disgusted.
