Friday the 13th (2009) Remake appreciation thread

Seriously. What didn't you people like about it? Because it was "too slick" or "too new" or what? I admit, it has some flaws, like the lack of the atmospheric "ki ki ki mah mah mah" and the Friday the 13th theme song, but it was a reboot, what did you expect? Derek Mears was amazing, first of all. The characters were good enough, especially the first group of kids. What was missing? What did you hate so much about it?????

Jason + stupid teenagers + violence + drugs/alcohol + Crystal Lake = THE FRIDAY THE 13TH FORMULA!

I would appreciate it if women would stop putting plastic in their bodies.

I happen to like some plastic in my body now and then.

It was okay, but just that. Okay. It was really just a modern version of any number of the sequels. Aside from any anachronisms, you could really stuff it somewhere between, say, 3 and 4 and it would fit in just fine.

Folks just seem more forgiving of the older films' flaws because they grew up on them. I love those old movies just as much as the next guy, but I also see them for what they are.

I fall into the camp that dislikes Jason taking a hostage, and I also dislike the cheesy emphasis they put on some of the original series story beats (particularly "His name was Jason" and finding the mask).

However, in terms of deaths and action overall, solid entry. I myself don't get why people thought the characters were so much worse than any others in the series. Clay was out for a good cause, and Lawrence at least was ready to risk his life for his friend.

I don't think that the remake is a bad movie, it is a decent entry into the F13 series and is the best F13 movie to come out since "Jason Lives". (imo) It is also one of the few remakes that actually does justice to the original series. There are obvious flaws in the movie but like the OP pointed out it stuck with the basic F13 formula and is a decent movie overall. There are some memorable kills and Julianna Guill's sex scene is a thing of beauty, it may be the best sex scene in slasher movie history (srs).

For anyone interested (I'm sure everyone is) I have ranked the F13 series. Once I realized the October Challenge was not going to happen I decided to have some fun with it and re-watch and rate the series.

1. Friday the 13th (1980)
2. Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives
3. Freddy Vs. Jason
4. Friday the 13th Part 2
5. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
6. Friday the 13th (2009)
7. Friday the 13th Part 3
8. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
9. Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood
10. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
11. Jason X

So, I think the remake is right on par with the entire series and is better than a lot of the sequels.

* I have not re-watched and rated JGTH yet, because it is the only film that I do not own, but you can imagine it on the bottom of the list somewhere :)

Happy Halloween!

Platinum Dunes, NO Kane Hodder, terrible location, killed the original franchise. And yes. Too slick. An unnecessary remake if there ever was one.
