Why are so many British actors getting lead roles in Hollywood films?

It is not a secret that the British dislike the USA, but we give them leading roles in our movies - The only answer I can think of is that Hollywood can see bigger box office sales in England and Europe. But I guess that is the way it is with American films now a days, making money is what matters, not making great films.

Young American actors can't act.

They get paid less. Nobody's making $30 million a film in the UK so you can pay a British actor a fraction of that and that will be more money than they've ever made in their career.

Hummm maybe is the fact that many UK actors are excellent performers through all the cinema history: Jeremy Irons, Alan Rickman, Michael Caine, Dirk Bogarde, Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Reed, and I could go on for hours with great british artists.

As a Brit I can honestly say I really like USA and even some of the Americans I have met have been ok (not the stupid ones though).
Not sure why you think American actors instead of British ones will make a film "great"
As far a music goes, many Americans lack originality and imagination which is why the Brits can make good music, most hard rock still sounds like Jimi Hendrix, who had to go to the UK to get appreciated and had a British band, and Led Zeppelin.
Some of you may be familiar with the fact that some of the early Rolling Stones songs were originally by black artists, but unfortunately at the time the USA generally would not buy music by black people, so it was left to the Brits to discover these artists, cover their records and then sell them to USA.
It should be well known to many people that this led to the recognition enjoyed by John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King etc.
The Beatles honed their craft in Hamburg Germany where they met many American GIs (Black and White) and learned more about their disparate musical tastes, incorporating it into their music. In USA music like this would not have been widespread.
I am proud that Britain has always had a different non-segregationist approach to music, such that Diana Ross stated how amazing it was to her to visit UK in the 1960s and appear on Top Of The Pops with white acts, as this simply did not happen in the USA at that time. In the UK colour of your skin was not something to segregate people by.
In USA early Nat King Cole records had no picture lest some record buyers be deterred by him being negro, Pat Boone sold more copies of "ain't that a shame" by Fats Domino, etc.
MTV originally played only derivative "white" rock music, until Sir Paul McCartney with Stevie Wonder showed how the world could be more like a piano keyboard. Commercial sense eventually triumphed and a lot of mainstream music in USA is now by black artists, and white artists "sounding black" like Britney, and Justin Timberlake.
I agree that mostly British actors are the best, but some American actors are good, for instance Hugh Lawrie, Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Damien Lewis and Christian Bale are among my favourites. But the English invented Shakespeare and the codpiece which is why we have all the world's best actors.

What backwoods city u live in down there in Florida?? The Brits love the Yanks your IQ isn't high enuff to grasp their humor.

Idk I think it's because Yanks love the constipated Brit accent. Personally, I wish they'd round them all up with Piers Morgan and ship them back: I cannot stand the dreadful accent, I can't understand a damned thing they're saying!!! Well, except for the one rare actor who not only enunciates but was sexy to boot!

The British actors that are in demand aren't using their British accent. They are doing convincing American accents. Unless they are already established stars, British actors who want to play leading roles, not villains, have to talk like you and me or they aren't working much on this side of the Atlantic. It is just not British. Australians, also. I watch the talk shows and some actor on a TV series who sounds American is sounding like he just got off the boat from England or Australia. Without a Trace, three of the main actors were not American.

I love the guy that played House M.D's American accent!!! I was SHOCKED when I Netflixed a DVD and watched the interview. I died when I heard his constipated accent. His sexy quotient went to the basement instantly for me! Some are saying Kelly Reilly is also British?? They are criticizing her American accent on her forum. I have never heard her talk constipated I think she does a great US accent but then again, I don't believe she's a Brit.
There is only 1 Brit I like(d) with original accent. Oh and Joan Collins is good too. She's not annoying. And that gorgeous lady with the hair, forgot her name, Anne-hyphen something, she was huge in TV movies in the 80's, she's good too and her accent not annoying. But Nigel Lithgow? Cat Deely? Simon Cowell? Fugheddit! They need an enema before they speak, then they can talk normal!

Yes I much prefer the gay-sounding New Yorker nasal whine!
Part of the problem is that the English accents on American productions are fake. Presumably the director wants them to go full cockney, English toff, or late 19th century street urchin. I rarely hear a genuine English accent on American TV shows or movies.
Went to see Revenge Of The Sith a few years ago in New York, and my wife booked the tickets using an automated telephone service.
The machine could not recognise what film she was saying until she went into full Fran Dreschler "STARR WARRS" and this was recognised by the machine.

The British do not dislike the USA but the dolts living here and expressing unsupported arguments fuel their sharp wits. I am sure there are plenty of US citizens working in British productions too.
You are expressing hate speech when you speak ill of a nation of people. Also, this post in not appropriate for this board.

You can't generalize and say they do or don't. I was on a British movie site and most of them were nice, but there were several that had a bug up their ass about Americans. And I mean big time.

I was on a movie site and the owner called himself Anonymous. He was a right wing Republican who thought a good use of a movie site was to bash Obama. That didn't seem wise to me.

Let me start by saying I am not a Brit! I am an Englishman! And I love America and Americans.
To be fair, there are some pretty good English actors around currently. There are also many examples of Americans playing English roles. Just enjoy watching.

I remember when any British TV series, in order to have a hope of succeeding in the US, had to have a US leading actor: The Baron, The Persuaders, Man in a Suitcase, The Champions. Department S etc. Even Gerry Anderson had to make his puppet series US friendly. To this day there are people in the US who think they're US shows.
As a child I often wondered why most US shows never had a token British star.
The exception was Roger Moore who managed to have it both ways in The Saint and Maverick.

it is (only) to get a larger audience in England and other countries.
- not because they are the best choice for the role...

Do you really think Hollywood cares about the size of the UK audience? British actors are cheaper, better trained and great at faking American accents.
21 Name: Anonymous : 2014-08-28 20:17
British Actors are cooler, ever watch House, Sherlock, Doctor Who?
22 Name: Anonymous : 2014-08-28 20:29
i don't think its to do with british actors being cheaper...or that were better actors....I think its more to do with supply and demand
If you think about it logically....the American film industry is a multi multi billion dollar industry....making thousands of films a years...and those thousands of films.....need hundreds of thousands of actors...of decent acting ability
yeah you could argue...and say that there are plenty of decent American actors as it is...and plenty of wannabe actors moving to new York or L.A to follow their dream...who could play these roles...but how many of them are actually good enough
if America had enough decent actors to fill these hundreds of thousands of film/tv roles every year....then they wouldn't have to go looking abroad
to me its a numbers games...where you have all these film/tv roles that need filling....but you don't have enough quality American actors to fill them all...so producers look elsewhere
an American film maker is not gonna hire someone just because theyre American...theyre gonna hire the person who does the best job
at the end of the day...a film is a product...and any director/producer etc...wants the best talent...regardless of wether theyre from...America..Canada..Australia...Britain etc etc etc
whats happening is that the demand for good acting talent...is outstripping the supply...and American film makers are having to look elsewhere for it...to keep their industry afloat
