Has anyone here seen the horror movie Open House (1987)? and would you recommend buying it? I'm interested in slasher movies and have quite a few in my collection but I've heard some people say that it would be one of the lesser slasher movies that came out in the 80's.

Yes, I've seen it. I don't know your tastes, and even if I did that's still no guarantee you would like it or not, so no.

I have. It rarely gets mentioned.

It is absolutely one of the lesser slashers of the' 80s, as you say. The latter half of the decade really saw a decline in lots of things that were good or popular in the first half, and slashers were no exception. There were some decent ones still being churned out, but the ratio of good to bad (or just average) is very unbalanced in comparison to the golden years of 1980-1983.
As for Open House I only saw it once several years back and it was pretty unmemorable overall. Watchable, sure, especially if you're a slasher nut but not really worth going out of the way for. I wouldn't fork over too much dough for it if you intend on buying it.
These from the late' 80s ('87-'89 are more worth your time) -
Don't Panic
Hide and Go Shriek
The Last Slumber Party (for utter zero-budget surrealism)
Slumber Party Massacre 2
Stagefright
Opera
Bloody Movie
Anguish
Slaughterhouse
Cutting Class (cheesy as hell, early Brad Pitt movie)
Dead Girls (1990, but about as "80s" as you can get)

Personally I thought it as one of the better slashers
