Presumably contact lenses would be apparent on close-up shots. Do actors with bad vision in roles without eyeglasses generally wear contacts whenever possible, and only remove them when the cinematographer says they would show? Or do they just tough it out and shoot all scenes without corrective lenses?

I have noticed contact lenses in actors' eyes before in close up shots.

I remember an interview with Christopher Lambert, when he was asked about his intense stare. He said that it was because he had really bad eyesight, so he was just straining to see properly! So he obviously wasn't wearing contact lenses when filming (this was around the time of the first Highlander movie I think). But then again, some people just can't get on with contact lenses.

You might not see them on vhs, dvd or blu-ray but with 4k and bigger screens they will be easy to see!
