The Amityville Horror (2005)

This is one of the few remakes from the post-2000 period that I thought surpassed the original (which I disliked).
What are other posters view of this, particularly in comparison with the 1979 movie?

I enjoyed this film, too, and think its the best of the Platinum Dunes-produced horror films. Never seen the original though so I can't compare.

OP I agree. The 2005 remake was superior IMO. I honestly thought the original was pretty boring.

I might give it a try, I don't think much of the original.

It's terrible. Nothing positive to say about it.

It's not a badly directed or acted film. The problem for me lies in the script, which isn't much different from other haunted house films of recent years. They also had the chance to cover more of the book, but instead we got something even less faithful than the original film. Though the new Amityville film isn't another remake, I'm hoping it's better than this.

Maybe I'll check it out. I usually love haunted house flicks but I was very disappointed with the original Amityville film. I never read the novel (allegedly based on fact) but I found the film to be thoroughly unconvincing and not scary with "special effects" that were pretty cheesy even by 70's horror standards. The whole series was pretty bland with the exception of Part 2 (the prequel) which was OK.
My ratings:
The Amityville Horror (1979) 5/10
Amityville II: The Possession (1982) 6/10
Amityville III: The Demon (1983) 3/10
I saw a couple of the direct to video sequels as well but I forget which ones they were and they were almost as uneventful as the third (worst) film in the series.

I agree with you about the original, but the remake really is a much better film.
Also agree that Amityville II was the best of the old bunch.

Which Amityville film was the one in 3D, that kinda sucked.
