Punk is like Dead Kennedys, fast paced, thrashed, >2min songs with no real melody circa 1970s.
Post-punk is slow, melodic, almost dark punk of the mid-late 80s.
Personally I see it as pre-heroin, post-heroin. But I doubt that's really where the prefix comes from.
I don't think there's a pre-punk.
