So I was listening to a radio program discussing the problem of a lack of fresh water for human use. They came up with only two possible answers (they always do). Desalination plants and recycling sewage.

But there is a third solution. Reducing the human population. The elephant in the room, but it never gets mentioned.

By all means, do go ahead and lead by example.

Any "environmentalist" who doesn't staunchly support population reduction, even by extreme measures, isn't really an environmentalist.

The earth is 3/4 water. I have no clue how reducing human population is even worthy of consideration.

That modest proposal has been around for centuries. A panacea, but without popular support for unfathomable reasons.

The human population of the Earth has more then doubled just during my lifetime.

Growth like this is NOT sustainable.

In the 1970s there was a movement called Zero population Growth, using a masthead book The Population Bomb.
Oppoonents used the same arguments used against any scientific theory that might make people uncomfortable or is aiming for some social change.

There is no proof. The proponents are only in it to make money. Science and human ingenuity can solve anything and overpopulation can be solved when it becomes a problem.

There has been some movement to restrict the human population. In the west especially growth has slowed substantially. Chinas one-child policy has ameliorated their gigantic population problem.

At the time it was thought there were three possible solutions.
1. Concerted action like the one-child policy, and the failed climate change policies.

2. Draconian action after the problem has become serious.

3. War, pestilence, massive relocation of populations to more amenable regions.

We are currently seeing a small slivce of the third option, with millions of displaced people moving from Africa and the middle east towards the west.

There is another solution which, I'm sure, they wouldn't dare mention but I will.
Go vegan.
Billions of gallons of water is wasted each year for livestock.
If everyone went vegan, than the water wasted on crops for animals would all be freed for the people.
Just think for a moment how much water that would be and how it would solve all of our problems at not having enough water.
The California drought would vanish in a day if everyone went vegan.

As the former Dairy State, does this mean you'd be okay with CA doing without cows?

Would that vanished drought eliminate all the wildfires, too?

Nobody ever mentions that, even though it is the cause of most human problems including global warming, pollution, scarcity of resources...in fact, almost every serious problems facing humanity as a species can be traced to over population.

As my famous Uncle put it: We have a surplus of useless eaters.
