They were a strong kingdom back in the 1400s IIRC. They have the sad misfortune of being a race historically despised by both the Germans and the Russians and of having largely indefensible terrain that armies have crossed over or occupied for most of their history.

Eastern Europe has been fighting off Muslum invasions for centuries, and I think with how Poland has suffered and fought for its independence the past couple of hundred years, they'll be the last country in Europe to be overrun without one hell of a fight. Germany could learn from them.
