Cut Welfare Programs, and the National Debt disappears in 11 Years!

I did the calculations myself. The federal budget is $3.7 trillion. Medicare and Medicaid make up $900 billion. Social Security is another $800 billion. Cut both and you have a surplus of $1.7 trillion every year as long as you earn roughly the same in tax revenue. That means with this annual surplus, it will take about 11 years to whittle down this $20 trillion debt.

But if you cut social security all the old people might have to go back to work. And it might be back-breaking work, too!

Did you add in corporate welfare?

I based it off of this.

There is a budget deficit, cutting 1.7 trillion doesnt create a 1.7 surplus. The majority of military spending would have to be cut also.

You wouldn't. A chunk of that money comes back to the government in form of taxes like sales tax.

That means with this annual surplus, it will take about 11 years to whittle down this $20 trillion debt.

Except the US has bonds out there up to 30 years long. Meaning they can't be paid until they mature.

You could setup a fund and put money in it to service the interest rate of those bonds (the coupon rate, or interest rate, on most government bonds is fixed) and money for when the bonds mature.

That's if you were serious about your idea and not just posting trolling crap.

SS isn't supposed to be welfare. Its supposed to belong to the people who paid into it.

But I dont get that. If they paid into it, why is it still being charged as a percentage of the national budget. In other words, the tax payers are sort of paying for it too.
