Throwing coin currency in the trash doesn't constitute either of those.

I used to save all of mine in a tub. This was back when I used cash. After about five years it came to about 70 quid.

Why not do that and give them to someone in need?

That's stupid. Throw them in a jar somewhere. Eventually what happened to me will happen to you...you'll have enough to buy a brand new Xbox 360 (or whatever console is current at the time) and a couple of games.

I understand the sentiment. I won't bend over to pick one off the sidewalk for the same reason.

However, before you throw one out, check the date. If it's before 1981, then that coin is mostly copper, and the copper content is worth more than the face value.

Someone said defacing coins is illegal. I'm not sure of that. I recall going to an amusement park as a child where a machine would take a penny, physically stretch it and emboss something on it.
I've never heard of anyone being arrested for it. As a child, I used to put a penny on the railroad tracks so that the train would run over it and flatten it.

So basically, if you don't, say, take a nickle and change it in order to pass it off as a quarter, you're fine.

I don't throw them out, but then they are a pain too. And pennies cost more to make than they are worth.

Time to do away with them. Can still price to the penny but when you go to the register they should just round up or down to the nearest nickle. End of the year all will be even for each person within less than a dollar.

We don't even have the penny anymore in Canada. I kept a couple for using on scratch tickets.

You shouldn't. I have a 3 foot tall cylinder. Whenever it gets filled to the top with pennies is equals about 60 dollars.

I knew a guy who saved his coins in a 5 gallon water jug. It was mostly pennies. I wonder how he got it out of his apartment and into his car?

We got rid of one- and two-cent coins years ago. The lowest denomination is 5 cents.

And that is what makes the most sense in the U.S.....except maybe to coin producers and collectors.

I have a nice collection of pennies for the bank.
