Trump thinks that $15 an hour is too much money

1 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 17:52
for regular Americans to earn as a minimum wage.

Meanwhile he and his family get rich by not renting to people of color, and conning Americans by scams like his university scam and then brags about not paying taxes on this alleged billions of dollars.

but $15 bucks for hard working regular Americans.

Way too rich.

What a hero. (spelled with a z.)

He's going to fight for the little people though - the mere millionaires. That's why he and Speaker Ryan plan to add 7+ trillion dollars to the National Debt - borrowing that money from America's future to fund tax cuts for them today!

Some of it might trickle down though.

The minimum wage is a double edged sword, just like any other price control. It could be said to be both helping and hurting the little people.

For example, a minimum wage can increase the earnings of someone who already has a minimum wage job. This will improve their quality of life. But that comes at a cost to others.

It prices even more unskilled workers out of the market. If a worker isn't skilled enough for a business to justify spending $15 an hour on, they're simply not getting hired.

So instead of allowing this person to work for $14 an hour, they can't work at all. This forces the $14 an hour worker to go on welfare (or to commit illegal activities). So why not just let them work for $14 an hour?

Well, all snark aside: minimum wage legislation isn't a really good way to deal with poverty issues, because it will have winners and losers. The long run solution is more jobs nowhere near the minimum wage, not messing around with the minimum wage itself.

The minimum wage does need to be increased, because the number of people who have minimum wage full-time jobs and qualify for government benefits essentially means it is functioning as a public subsidy for low-wage employers. However, at the same time, $15 per hour does run the risk of some serious unintended consequences.

Rather than people throwing out their subjective feelings on fairness, more quantitative analysis on the optimum data point is needed, in terms of minimizing public subsidies. I suspect it will come in at around $10 per hour.

Explain a little something to me please. Why should someone working at McDonalds get the same about of pay as someone who is an EMT or some other REAL skill?

Explain a little something to me please. Why should someone working at McDonald's get the same about of pay as someone who is an EMT or some other REAL skill?

They shouldn't. But nowhere in your thoughts is a reason for people working a minimum wage not to earn at least 15/hr. If the minimum wage had kept growth with the total pace of American income growth since 1968 it would $21.16. Which means, not only has the minimum wage workers been screwed, but so have those EMT's and "REAL" skill workers.

Right-wingers who tout about non-regulated markets and trickle-down economics never mention that the middle and lower classes are no better off than they were before Reaganomics. Every decade, it's the top percent who continue taking larger portions of the pie, and they reinforce their power through their money in Washington.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party brands minimum wage hikes as an attack (i.e. unfair) on the middle class and as wealth redistribution, and too many people like >>5 fall for it. The real focus should be on corporations and why they aren't giving any of the increases in wealth to the middle and lower classes. They are much more productive than they were 30 years ago, so they should at least receive a sliver of new wealth created if trickle-down economics means anything, right? No, their wages remain stagnant.

Instead, we have the classic misdirection with the middle and lower classes attacking each other.

When will people wake the **** up?

Explain a little something to me please. Why should someone working at McDonalds get the same about of pay as someone who is an EMT or some other REAL skill?

They shouldn't.

Gee that was easy.

I just googled what EMTs make in the US and I think it is criminal.

They should start at about 20 to 25 bucks an hour and their wages should go up yearly based on seniority and performance.

Having said that EMTs typically start their careers there but then move on to various other more skilled jobs within the medical field in which their salaries do go up.

Having said that I have always believed that those in the medical field and in the general field of care work of all kinds are woefully underpaid while people within certain other specialized technical business, or arts industries sometimes earn ridiculous amounts of money.

Unchecked Capitalism is definitely not a good system. Unfortunately other forms of government have an equally or in some cases much worse track record.

By the way, what is wrong with McDonald's or any other minimum wage job?

People have to eat right?

I have way more respect for someone (usually young and at the beginning of their careers anyway) working at McDonald's than I do for some lying politician, gun dealer, university scammer, hustler, mafia person or such kinds of people that earn 100s if not 1000s of times more money.

I suppose you think people who work at McDonald's are lazy nobodies who deserve to have to stay home all the time, never travel, and never have children or send them to college right?

What about people who work in other restaurant industries, food industries or custormer service jobs.

Are they all scum too who should only make enough to afford to buy dog food to live on while sleazy porn stars and reality star morons fly around in golden jets?

The truth is in most states the math just isn't there for retail/fast food jobs. Businesses could crumble. That doesn't mean it should stay at 8.10, which is where it is in my state, that's absurdly low. But if we aim too high we might not get any improvement at all. I think 10-12 is a reasonable expectation.

The truth is it there for most businesses. As they profited from not keeping up with the times. Some not so.I agree it shouldn't be jumped up federally that high overnight. Though it should be stepped up every year until it gets to where it should be. Which right now would be $21.16. This would be the easiest fix to giving the lower and middle classes the raises they haven't gotten in decades while stimulating the economy in one fell swoop.

Your post shows good reason. Of course even if Trump himself pushed congress for 10-12 (which of course he would never do) it would be haggled down to maybe 9 dollars at the most.

Trump has a habit of starting big and outrageous and then giving himself lots of room to make a deal. If he started at 15 in his rhetoric there might actually be some small chance of settling at 10-12 which would actually be a somewhat reasonable raise when compared to other countries.

(For example minimum raise in Canada is about 11 dollars an hour on average depending on the province.)

Seriously???

Your defending 15$ an hour to cook hamburgers???

You're a special kind of stupid

It's also learning to work with the public.
Like the time the kids ordered their food, then spat in the face of the cashier & drove off laughing.
Or the time the guy pulled up to the window with no pants.
Or the times the kids ordered, but then drove off laughing. How much fun to have us prepare food & then not take it & have an overring.

Or when the district rep drops by to report the current robbery thing where someone jumps the person taking the trash out, then locks the crew in the freezer, or they claim to have someone with a rifle in the building across the street aimed at the counter cashier, give us your cash.
Or the guy in my sister's church class who still couldn't bring himself to look for a job because the only reason he survived was he played dead when the robbers had the entire crew lie down & shot everyone else dead.

I imagine the other crewmembers of the McDonald's Huberty shot up had some freaky feelings.

But it's "just" making burgers.

But it's "just" making burgers.

Yes, it is just making burgers because I can find sensational stories of any profession, like the time a couple of ghetto thugs showed up to my workplace looking for one of our lawyers who they think screwed them in a real estate deal.

So Americans calling for 15 dollars an hour including the California government which has already passed a bill to raise it to 15 dollars an hour by the year 2022. and including Bernie Sanders and all his supporters are all

insane?

According to you?
20 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 21:22
It's not 2022 and the rest of the country is not California and yes Bernie supporters are largely insane.
21 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 21:35
yes Bernie supporters are largely insane.

But people who voted for criminal Hillary and scammer Donald are presumably of sound mind right?
22 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 22:03
I wouldn't be surprised if Trump administration tried to get rid of minimum wage laws altogether.
23 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 22:09
If they did that would slow the trend toward automation.

Is that something Trump would want?

I think he's more of a Luddite than you think.
24 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 22:12

This has been happening and has nothing to do with minimum wage.

Most people's have under other MW hikes. Not that it should matter. These people tend to get raises while the MW stays the same or lowers over time due to inflation.

NOT in Trump's America.

Osama Bin Trump: Make America Terrible Again
31 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 22:50
That actually is how economics works. Price inflation exists.
32 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 23:03
$15 minimum wage is a terrible idea. It will cost people jobs and hurt further an already hurting lower and middle class in the form of higher prices.

People said the same thing about every MW enactment. It never happens.
34 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 23:33
If Trump does a trade war with China and others, likely the price of everything will go up. The people most hurt will be the ones making low wage.

Increasing the price of workers prices some workers out of the market?

What a coincidence...
37 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-11 23:59
While the CPI calculator I use indicates that, keeping up with the rate of inflation since 1966 when the FMW was $1.25/hr., $15/hr is reasonable.

However, wages throughout the range of people being employed at hourly wages is also far behind the CPI. Hourly workers at the Subaru plant near us start at $14/hr. A graduate nurse starts at $19/hr. Another factory which builds commercial trailers (tractor-trailers) starts at $12/hr for entry level temps with a raise to $13/hr if hired fulltime.

These people should be making $30/hr according to that same CPI.

By the same calculation, rent is going to increase $400/mo. A pound of hamburger is going to cost more than $5/lb., a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread the same. This is in the Midwest, which isn't nearly as expensive as living in CA or NY.

So, is it still such a good idea?
38 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-12 00:48
There are arguments for increasing the minimum wage. There are benefits and drawbacks to that but it would be a rational policy choice.

What does not make sense is one minimum wage across the nation. A dollar means so much more in a small rural town than it does in say NYC or San Fran.

40 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-12 01:23
$15/hr is a bit much in my opinion. Going that high will do the things that the right says. It will push smaller companies out of business, drive prices up, and ultimately cause inflation. I'm all for a MW but it needs to be set at a reasonable level, which could also be tweaked for local economy.
41 Name: Anonymous : 2016-12-12 01:24
You are for Sanders who admitted he is a a socialist. That means he is effectively a communist. Communism works in theory but always fails in practice.Trump wants Americans to have money, but by raising the minimum wage for menial jobs doesn't help anything. All that means it the value of the dollar goes down. If a McDonalds burger flippe makes $15/hour then someone working as a nurse would have to make 40 an hour instead of 30 to compensate. The dollar becomes weaker. See the flaw here? We need to fix the economy first. We need to put people back to work full time. That will mean the employers will have less control and the average working man/woman will have more options for work. That means employers will have to pay the workers more to compete with the company across the street. Think before you talk, commie.

If you don't know the difference between democratic socialism (as practiced in the Nordic capitalist countries and Canada) and Communism then there is no reason to read further.
