how reliable are used refurbished consoles from Gamestop?

Anyone have any experiences of preowned/refurbished consoles?

Pretty reliable. My refurbished PS2 & Xbox 360 still work fine with no issues.

If it's the same as in Australia, don't refurbs come with a full new console warranty? In that case it should be fine.

Considering I've gotten broken games from Gamestop before (with 99% of the time able to exchange said copy as most of the time it's pretty cool unless I go to the wrong Gamestop and get the guy who goes "I'm sure the game is fine, it's probably your Xbox that's broken" and try to sell me a console) I would never trust a refurbished console from Gamestop, especially when there's proof that people have bought Xbox's from Gamestop and found out they were already console banned from Live.

I see where you are coming from. The GameStop in my neighborhood is the only one really trust. The same place I got my refurbished consoles. Ironically there used to be three within same area not that for from each other. The oldest (actually called Funco Land) one either went out of business or moved to another location. So now it's down to two again. My favorite has some guys that look out for me on certain things.

Refurbished consoles are like Doc's wife. You can shine up the outside, but the inside has had so many different parts in them you're just asking for bad time.

I tend to only buy refurbished directly from the manufacturer because it typically guarantees that they've been refitted with original parts rather than cheap knock-offs. Nintendo, for example, sells high-quality refurbished consoles on their website for decent prices. I've bought refurbished from game stores before and had them start crapping out after a year. Never again.

I got one in 2002 or 2003. It had some audio problems right out of the box. Gamestop replaced it with another refurbished console and it still works, 13+ years later.

I was thinking of getting a refurbished 3DS from EB if the price is right and enough people vouch for them in this thread.

So Ive read several reviews on refurbished consoles from Gamestop and it appears to be a crapshoot on the system or systems you get and how well they run.

From Gamestop?

It really depends on the Gamestop. If you have a local one that you trust, than go for it.

If it happens to be one of those crappy ones that try to sell you crap that's free or that don't even exist anymore (like one that tried to actually sell me an online pass), then I probably don't even have to tell you to steer clear.
