He had ideas for another trilogy set after IV, V, and VI.

He says they didn't want his ideas and if he was involved in the new films he would muck it up. Then he went on to say that they weren't interested in creating something new, but a "retro" Star Wars. He said you can say whatever you want about his films, but they were new and inventive. He believes in trying something new and moving forward.

I kind of agree with him on this. Movies should continue to try and break new ground. You sometimes get a festering turd, other times you get a masterpiece, but you roll the dice, you take what you get.

Except his originality nearly imploded the legacy of Star Wars with three mediocre prequels, The Phantom Menace was unwatchable and Attack of the Clones is mediocre and corny.

If I had to choose between a mediocre and original film over a retro and entertaining one, I'd choose the latter.

But this is an allegory on Hollywood itself.

This is the biggest problem with Hollywood overall, this is just one example.

They are all about remakes, reboots, rehashing what is popular for guaranteed money.

There was a time when Hollywood created new ideas. As long as people go to the troughs to eat the garbage they feed us, the more garbage they will produce.

You mean like how STAR WARS was FLASH GORDON mixed with THE HIDDEN FORTRESS with some THE SEARCHERS, THE DAM BUSTERS, THE FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS and TRIUMPH OF THE WILL thrown in?

Also, The Phantom Menace is hardly original:

- Heroes saving royalty from the Sith? Check.
- Prodigious pilot contributing to the destruction of the main enemy base? Check.
- Most famous cast member playing a character who is killed off by the villain? Check.

I agree with him. The new Star Wars was enjoyable and very well done in its own right but it lacked ambition. It's a very safe semi-reboot/semi-sequel that could've been much better had it had some ambition and originality.

But looking at the digital horror that is the prequel trilogy and Indy 4, I think we can agree that a nostalgic film is better than anything George could have produced at this point.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Empire Strikes Back is in my top 10. That said, there are only really 2 star wars films for me. It hasn't been great since 1980.

I agree. I don't think Lucas was right for the job, but the safe bet was lame.

This may smash all box office records, but in 20 years, that's all it will be remembered for. It's not anywhere near on par with A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back.

It was obvious where Disney were taking Star Wars even before TFA came out. Their tv show Rebels is just thinly veiled rehash of the original trilogy.

Lucas's prequels could have been better made, but there was at least something bigger and newer in them to be experienced. Lucas brought imagination to the films right up until the very end. It's just a pity he'd lost his touch as a filmmaker by that point.

George Lucas died years ago. That man who claims to be him, he's just an android.

The Force Awakens is what Star Wars needed at this point: a "safe", accessible film to gain back the trust of old fans and also bring in new ones. Now that they've achieved that, they can go to new places in the next films.

I thought The Force Awakens did some stuff right, like Ren's introduction as a loner trying to survive in the world and Fin's backstory as an African American storm trooper rebelling against his enslavement. It was fun to fly in a Tie-fighter, the blood hand print demarcating the soldier falling out of line was clever, it was crazy to see the woman beat the dark, white, male Jedi. I did from time to time question whether I watching Star Wars or in fact attending Political Correctness 101, but for the most part I liked 80% of the movie.

Good. Good decision by Disney.

I'm glad Lucas didn't have any real involvement in TFA, his ideas would have probably involved comical characters and dumb dialogue. TFA works, because of its entertainment value, and nostalgia, which the prequels really lacked.

Subsequent films will have more uniqueness. Abrams & Disney wanted first to shore up their beachhead.

But I thought Disney wanted to make The Force Awakens rhyme with the original saga? Like poetry?

Why should I take the man who gave us Jar Jar Binks and the love secenes between Anakin and Padme in AOTC seriously when it comes to accusing others of messing up Star Wars?

This, pretty much. And it's not as if the original Star Wars was particularly original in any regard. I mean, it's pretty rigidly fashioned after Campbell's monomyth for Chrissakes. Narratively and artistically it is thoroughly classic and conservative in its approach.

Jar Jar Abrams did ruin it.

He's just jelly of all the success the new film is having and the fact that it's actually, you know, good.

My question to George Lucas is: "What else would he expect from Di$ney?" That's what they do, make the quick easy buck with little creativity or effort.
