I'm not interested in arming myself out of impulse. I simply want to take the preventative measures to protect myself in the case of a rare incident where a gun will be handy, such as a home invasion. It just irks me that he's judging me for wanting to protect myself.

Pay no attention to the "Liberal" vs "Con" stuff... it has nothing to do with gun ownership or anything else for that matter. Most Americans have opinions which fall on both sides of that imaginary line.

But that being said, you are being very responsible in dealing with your desire to purchase a weapon.

Do the following:
Research... so you can choose the proper weapon.
Budget for Professional Training... A firearm IS like a fire extinguisher or any other tool. But like any tool, you MUST learn how to use it safely.

I think that during heated debates like this, there is a tendency for people to jump to conclusions and not actually hear the other person out. Things often get lost in translation when people aren't really communicating properly.

I'm a liberal, and largely "anti-gun" in the sense that I've never felt the need to posess a gun, and I support stronger gun regulation. However, I don't see anything wrong or impulsive about someone wanting a gun in their home for home defense, as long as they are properly trained, keep the weapon safe and away from children (gun locks), and the person doesn't have a criminal history or history of mental illness. In that circumstance, it's perfectly reasonable to own a handgun, deer rifle, or shotgun. It's easy for liberals to just dismiss (or not even consider) reasonable positions like this because many of them just assume that anyone suggesting they want a gun is an NRA supporting, war mongering, anarchist, gun nut! It's not fair to make that assumption about people when they back it up with a reasonable argument. A single female living alone in a dangerous neighborhood might feel a sense of security and have need for a gun. People who love in rural areas and enjoy hunting deer or other wild animals for food should have the right to own rifles.

I'm not particularly a fan of (gun collectors) who just like to own as many different kinds of weapons as they can get. It's one thing if someone collects "classics", but when they are going for modern assault rifles, and the ammunition to go with them, I don't agree with that. People shouldn't be allowed to buy assault rifles, or high capacity magazines, but they can. People shouldn't be able to have concealed carry licenses, but they can. People shouldn't be able to purchase guns legally without background checks, but they can. People on the terrorist watch list, or the no-fly list shouldn't be able to purchase a gun legally, but they can. Theses are the loopholes in gun laws that allow violent psychopaths to slaughter dozens of people at any given time. But republicans don't care about that because they care more about their right to get whatever kind of gun they want, via the easiest method possible. And that is largely why we as a nation have more deaths to gun violence than the UK, or Australia, or Japan.

The second amendment was never meant to allow the common citizen in a nation of 300 million people to possess an AR-15, or AK-47 assault rifle! It was meant so that well regulated militias (such as the National Guard) could protect local territory from an aggressive, FOREIGN government (like the British empire circa 1776). Unfortunately, the conservative leaning (at the time) US Supreme Court interpreted the second amendment in the most abstract way possible, in order to ensure that EVERY US citizen would always have the right to own a gun for ANY reason they want (irrespective of not being part of a well regulated militia). And that precedent is why we have 300 million guns on the streets in the US (roughly one gun per person).

The problem with a lot of conservatives is that they often blindly support the NRA, under the assumption that this represents "protecting their gun rights". And in doing so, they too often male stupid arguments like "guns don't kill people, people kill people", or "they way to protect ourselves from gun violence is by having more guns". These are nonsensical, NRA talking points that don't survive the test of scrutiny. Most liberals are not "anti-gun", they are "pro gun control", which is different. Most liberals don't want to abolish the second amendment, they merely interpret it differently. But their arguments often get dismissed by conservatives because conservatives see any talk of gun control as a threat to their freedom.

I use my firearms a LOT more than I used my fire extinguishers.

A good friend shouldn't force their politics on you. But maybe he just cares?

I think it's OK for him to express how he feels but he should let you make your own decisions and shouldn't judge you.
