Even though my husband is from France and my daughter is a French citizen and we have many friends and relatives in France and I freaking love Paris...I can't stand the schmaltz that won't go away, including Céline Dion singing Hymne à l'amour on some award show last night.

It just has to stop.

You watched an awards show. With Celine Dion as a featured performer. And you weren't prepared for schmaltz?

I'm going to call you naive.

Wrong. I never and I mean never watch award shows. I heard about Céline's performance on the radio this morning. (They're all a-twitter in her home province.) Then I saw the video on facebook and I clicked.

I was curious and it was 10 times worse than I expected...not so much Céline, who hams up every song she sings, but the audience reaction....God, get a life.

You heard about her performance. You deliberately chose to selectively watch that. Knowing that Celine Dion does schmaltz pretty much exclusively, even in the best of times.

How does this not make it even worse?

I mean, Elton John got a whole new career out of Princess Di's death. That's what these people DO. And Dion is of French extraction. You might as well as country-western singers not to do songs about 9/11. You might as well ask Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel not to do songs about--well, basically anything bad that happens to working class people (and I like them both, they're masters at what they do, but what they do is basically glorified schmaltz, at least some of the time).

The only musical tribute to Paris I've seen thus far was Jon Batiste and Stay Human doing an all-brass no-vocals rendition of La Marseilleise at the start of Late Night with Stephen Colbert. Now you can't do that song without being schmaltzy, because it's the schmaltziest national anthem ever written. But I thought it was tasteful enough. And it's not like I'm not watching TV, but I'm not going out of my way to watch stuff like that, because I know how bad it can get.

And so do you, so what's your excuse?

Especially after the attack in Mali they are still just giving all the focus to Paris

this is why I love Jared Leto more, at least he was caring enough to remember ALL the other countries that suffer at the hands of terrorism too! Good man!!
