With Germany bringing in around a million mostly Muslim migrants into the EU en mass, and this horrific attack which looks like it is going to be very major event, the people of the EU are going to have to decide if this atrocity as a cost of the EU ideals is worth those principles, or do we abandon them for self defence?

Internal borders are an EU ideal; in so much they are unnecessary.

External influences have demonstrated this is not so. Internal influences have no such sway on EU politics.

The EU died a long time ago

I think the European dream of mutual cooperation for the common good of Europe died a long time ago. The EU still exists, but it's held together by life support and the iron will of Germany.
