Jennifer Lawrence slams sexism and pay gap!

1 Name: SuperFratBoyExtreme : 2015-10-13 16:28
"I’m over trying to find the “adorable” way to state my opinion and still be likable! **** that. I don’t think I’ve ever worked for a man in charge who spent time contemplating what angle he should use to have his voice heard. It’s just heard. Jeremy Renner, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper all fought and succeeded in negotiating powerful deals for themselves. If anything, I’m sure they were commended for being fierce and tactical, while I was busy worrying about coming across as a brat and not getting my fair share. Again, this might have NOTHING to do with my vagina, but I wasn’t completely wrong when another leaked Sony email revealed a producer referring to a fellow lead actress in a negotiation as a “spoiled brat.” For some reason, I just can’t picture someone saying that about a man."

Aww, diddums. Some of us are stuck on minimum wage doing jobs we hate, while she gets to earn a fortune, play make belief and attend parties. I know which I'd prefer...
3 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 16:43
So you're saying she shouldn't fight to make more money? That's stupid.
4 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 16:48
No, but I can't really feel sorry for her when she makes an absolute fortune as it stands...
5 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 16:52
Yes that why she start with:

It’s hard for me to speak about my experience as a working woman because I can safely say my problems aren’t exactly relatable...... I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need. (I told you it wasn’t relatable, don’t hate me).

I don't think their any attempt to make people feel sorry for her.
6 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 16:59
Well, maybe SFBE should have quoted that bit, too...
7 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:03
One of the few times I agree with the Transformerstard
8 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:07
And you make a fortune compared to other people, so who are you to complain about her complaining?
9 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:10
I'm not complaining, just responding.
10 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:14
I guess I should've changed it to condescending, instead of complaining. You're right, you weren't complaining.
11 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:18
So you're saying she shouldn't fight to make more money? She absolutely should. It's just that her "epiphany" comes off rather trite.
12 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:22
How so? It was something shoved in a lot of people's faces when the Sony hack happened. And since she's a bigger star than Bradley Cooper or Jeremy Renner (and arguably Christian Bale) there's no reason for her to be making less money. What's trite about it?
13 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:26
I'm not referring to whatever her net-worth or commercial pull, but her declaration that she's no longer going to check such opinions merely to avoid coming off unfavorably to certain others. Trite due not so much to her celebrity but her age.

It's like, "Well, yeah, okay. Welcome to grownup world."
14 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:28
The issue isn't the fact that she's making millions already. It's the fact that, like most businesses, the women are making less than their male counterparts for the same amount of work.

I'd be happy if I were making a tenth of what she's making, but I'd still feel slighted if someone else in the field was making and it wasn't based on their body of work.
15 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:30
there are lots of factors that go into someone's pay. It is not just gender

plenty of male actors make less than other male actors too.
16 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:32
That whole thing she wrote is pretty interesting, not just the piece you posted. She comes across as someone who isn't bitter, but has learned a lot. Just makes me like her more.
17 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:37
You're a great actress bitch, one of my favorites (and you're pretty good jerk off material too) but shut the fuck up and stop complaining you cunt.
18 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:41
But that's a real concern for women in any workplace, what she's talking about. Even with an Oscar under her belt, she didn't feel right (and it's less socially acceptable for women) fighting for more money, even though her male co-stars did and it wasn't a big deal. Sure, part of that is that her co-stars are all men in their 40's who have the confidence and stature to fight for the most they can get, but this is a very real issue in every workplace for women of all ages and career paths.

This isn't a new conversation, the old "she's a bitch if she stands up for herself while he's an admirable fighter if he does" has been going on much longer than any of us have been alive. Lawrence is just relaying her own personal experience with it.
19 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:43
But this is a gender issue. It's pretty clear from the Sony email hacks that this is a gender issue.
20 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 17:48

Trouble is, the gender gap's been largely debunked. When you properly control for things, it all but disappears.

for example Brando received $3.7 million (back in 1977!) for 15 minutes in the 143 minute "Superman. Much higher than Christopher Reeve.
22 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 18:11
But that's different. Brando was a multi-Oscar winning legend, while Reeve (even though he's the star) was a nobody. That's not the case with what Lawrence is talking about. She's got the same amount of Os
23 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 18:24
I'd expect Reeve did well out of the sequels. Likewise with Lawrence and the Hunger Games franchise. As the star of such a movie where its sequels are dependent upon your participation, you're in a strong negotiation position. I remember that Coppola threatened to open Godfather 2 with Michael's funeral upon Pacino's pay demands.
24 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 18:31
Yes, Reeve did well for himself. Even with Superman 4, he did it so that he could make his project he really wanted to make, which was Street Smart. I'm not sure what Lawrence makes on the Hunger Games movies, but hopefully she renegotiated her contract after the success of the first one.

Coppola also cut out Vito Corleone and Clemenza out of the flashback scene in Godfather 2 because of the actor's salary demands.
25 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 18:39

And Duvall's demands led to his absence from Godfather 3-- you can overplay your hand.

Queue the chorus of Uncle Albert Gladstone Trotter and Metropolis and others who hate women to tell her to sit down and shut up and be grateful for what she gets.

For my part, I'll just say that she's absolutely right that Hollywood still has a woman problem.

And, as a side point, I'll just add that, gosh, wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where this kind of thing simply wasn't an issue? Where people wouldn't be divided economically by race and gender? Where we're not all fighting over whatever scraps some elite class decides is the bare minimum they can pay the people of the world while still reaping obscene profits for themselves? Isn't the way the world works right now just inherently screwed up? I'm just so sick of it, and it's time for something new.

To me, this is what's wrong with so many people. She's fighting for equal wage and you think because she makes a ton of money she should just shut up an be happy.

But if you're standing at your job right next to someone that's making more to do the exact same job, you'd be upset if that person made more based on gender.

I've also met very few people ever, that were 'stuck on minimum wage jobs'. Most every one has the ability to get the edu and/or training to improve their income. Most of the ones that are complaining, are just not driven to succeed. Not everyone, but certainly most.

Are we supposed to feel bad for multi-millionaire Jennifer Lawrence?

Because if we are at a point where multi-millionaires are victims, we have a serious problem in this country.

No one should feel bad for her.

She is one of the luckiest women in this country.

But she needs to be a victim.
32 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 20:43
She's not asking you to feel bad for her, and only a misogynistic asshole would think she was. She's asking why the men make more than her, and then answering that it's because she didn't fight for more.
33 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 20:59
Why is she even bringing it up?

She makes millions making movies.

Consider herself lucky when most actresses will never see that much money.

I hate people like that who bring up 'pay gaps' and 'sexism'.

Then do something else. No one is forcing her to do this.

I wouldn't miss her.

Excuse my ignorance of the way the film industry works, but isn't it incumbent on her agent to get here the best deal possible?

Are we to believe that the producers of 'American Hustle' set out to pay the male leads more money than the female leads?

I read the entire story on Dunham's blog, and it just doesn't quite add up. Smells fishy...like feminist propaganda.
35 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 21:33
the best deal possible?
The point is that the best deal possible is less than what her male counterparts make.

Are we to believe that the producers of 'American Hustle' set out to pay the male leads more money than the female leads?
Maybe. Or maybe not. It's not really a question of intentions, but rather one of results.

feminist propaganda.
You say that like it's a bad thing.

I'm pretty sure that RedCream is a Asian chick. That's the scuttlebutt, anyhows.

The woman CEO of Reddit banned salary negotiations (collective bargaining). Her excuse is that men are better at it than women, although she didn't say it that way, and it's not true anyway. Women are the manipulators. They just tend to go for perks more than salary. But clearly feminism is being used as a weapon in the same way as always. Pushing women into the workforce doubled the labor supply. Do you think anyone would consider banning perks, like health care, because women use more health care than men and is sexist? This is actually the argument used in favor of expanding perks. Do you really want to live in the world of Harrison Bergeron?
38 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 22:18
Why is she even bringing it up?

To be fair, it is an interview. She's likely just responding to questions designed to be topical.
39 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 22:27
It isn't an interview. She was invited to write on a topic of her own choice by the "publishers" of "Lenny", a "feminist email newsletter". This is what she wrote.

Okay. I would ask for your point, but I already know it.

Why?

Pay gaps exist everywhere, why would changing the job make a difference?

I wouldn't miss her.
That's really not relevant.

Pay gaps do not exist everywhere.

That is a total lie.
42 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-13 22:57
Here's the thing... say, hypothetically, that you're right about that, and pay gaps don't really exist, or at least that it's just a small problem blown out of proportion. Now, even if that's the case, shouldn't a reasonable position on this subject be "of course women should get paid just as much as men if they're performing work of equal value" rather than devoting so much energy into telling her to be quiet and stop complaining and to be grateful for what she has? If your knee-jerk reaction to a woman demanding equality is to basically say, "shut up," you're a misogynist, plain and simple. Now, you could say, "I agree with her in principle, I just happen to believe this isn't a real problem in society," but that's not what you're doing. You're basically saying, "that bitch makes too much money as it is, so she should shut her mouth."

Equal pay for the same work?

I worked at a manufacturing facility.

The men and women were paid the same.

But the men did much more work.

In fact, sometimes the output was more than twice the women. We had to keep track of it every shift.

But we all got paid the same.

So I don't buy for a second women are paid less for the same work.

Not at all.

Show me one ad where it is advertised lower pay for women.
46 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 00:19
So, in your mind, required evidence to change your mind on this matter would be to find examples of companies openly publicizing their pay discrimination practices? Yeah... that makes total sense.
47 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 00:41
Um, YES, of course.

What proof do you have that women are paid less than men for the SAME work?

I provided personal experience about a situation where men did much more work but were paid the same. In fact, some of the women were paid more because they had seniority. Tell me that is fair.

If we want fairness across the board, women are the ones who will be hurt most.
48 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 00:59

Here's the thing... say, hypothetically, that you're right about that, and pay gaps don't really exist, or at least that it's just a small problem blown out of proportion. Now, even if that's the case, shouldn't a reasonable position on this subject be "of course women should get paid just as much as men if they're performing work of equal value" rather than devoting so much energy into telling her to be quiet and stop complaining and to be grateful for what she has? Now, you could say, "I agree with her in principle, I just happen to believe this isn't a real problem in society," but that's not what you're doing.

But it's so easy to prove that pay gaps don't exist. If women really are willing to work for less than men, then all you have to do is start a business, hire only women, and you have a huge competitive advantage. This will happen, and does happen, until equilibrium is reached.

Homogenous groups are more cohesive than heterogenous groups. Aren't there all sorts of oddities in the team selections and salaries for sports teams where you're only comparing black males to other black males? Equality doesn't exist. You presume there must be sexism in Hollywood, only because outcomes aren't equal. That's all you have to go on. But there are almost no female cinematographers, and there are a lot of female producers, which is a much more lucrative position. Why is there so much more sexism in one department than another within the same industry? Maybe the transgenders are right about men and women having different brains. That makes a lot more sense than "the boogieman did it".

You're basically saying, "that bitch makes too much money as it is, so she should shut her mouth."

You're saying, "Poor little rich girl".

59 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 05:05
Naked pictures of her were released on the Internet. Everybody has already seen everything. She has no more value. What's she going to do now, act?
60 Name: RedCream : 2015-10-14 05:26
Everybody has already seen everything. She has no more value.

Perfect expression of misogyny. You assign her "value" based on her sexual purity, and once she's been "used" or "exposed" she has no more value, kind of like a man who does everything he can to get a woman into bed, and once he succeeds he tosses her aside because she has nothing more that he wants beyond the use of her body, or a potential bride who becomes "tainted goods" if she has sex before marriage. This thought process reveals an outlook in which women are considered something less than fully human, and whatever value they do have is based almost exclusively on their ability to be desirable sex objects.

I've asked you this many times, and I really wish I could know the real deep-seated answer... what happened to you in your life to make you hate women so much? Is it mommy issues? Did none of the girls give you attention in school? It has to be something.
61 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 05:46
He may have a point because quite a lot of actresses at 40 usually release a movie and the selling point is that it's their first topless scene etc because their career is fading off into the sunset and this is a last shot at glory but because we have seen her already nobody will care.
62 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 05:57
I read the entire thing she wrote (lol @ calling Lena Dunham a genius).

From what I gather, she admitted that she is mad at herself for not knowing how to negotiate. While her male costars can come across as fierce, her problem is that she is "too nice" or "sweet" in negotiating her salary. And if she claims demands, then she will be seen as a spoiled brat. I think it is also because that is how she sells herself to everyone - the perfect relatable actress - so even studios think they can low-ball her because well, she is "nice" anyway.

But yeah, she is young and this is a lesson learned for her and from her. It is all a learning process especially if you are thrust into stardom at a young age. I hope that she has good advisors around her too to be able to make strategies. For all you know people in her posse might have had a cut from her salary and she doesnt even know it.

But I hope she becomes wiser and more stern so that she can have whatever she wants. Negotiating for salary shouldnt even be an issue to begin with, truth be told.

Very interesting read by the way.

I told you before I dont hang around the Tablecat Lounge board. It's not fun there.
64 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 06:34
I agree with what you're saying.

To me, it seems like more of an age thing than a gender thing. She's young and was throttled up to super-stardom still new to the biz. She was making all this money and was over-whelmed. So, say she'd get offered 5 million to do and not knowing any differently as well as that was more money than she ever had before. She never gave it a second thought.

But, she then quickly learned that her co-stars were getting way more. But, we're talking about guys who have been around the block a few times. They know what they're doing and what they can get and so on. So, she's mad at herself for knowing she could have done better for herself and essentially got chump change.
65 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 06:58
I read that entire thing as well. I question the intelligence of anyone who would call Lena Dunham a genius.

Aside from that, I'd say maybe she needs a better agent. JLaw is a huge box office draw, based on the success of the Hunger Games films. I find it hard to believe an effective agent wouldn't be able to get the same $$ as say, Jeremy Renner.

I seriously doubt that film producers in Hollywood are systematically paying female actors less as a matter of regular practice. There has to be something else going on.

It smacks of feminist distortion and misrepresentation of facts, i.e, propaganda. The wage gap issue has been thoroughly debunked.
66 Name: Anonymous : 2015-10-14 07:19

1) Lawrence writes, and very much is, a manipulative Hollywood pawn. By now only fools believe she is "likable" - it has been proven the whole act is just a gimmick to make money and hook fish in. She plays on people's apparent desire to see more "real," "relatable" people in Hollywood, all for one thing only - box office cash.

2) Having said that, if it is indeed true that Hollywood is actually deliberately paying her less than her male counterparts, then that is indeed nonsensical and stupid. Hollywood is largely oiled and maintained by the political left; why would they intentionally try to sabotage useful relations?

Amy Pascal, the woman in charge of Sony pictures said at the time of the leak, "If Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams wanted more money they should have asked for more money". If a woman in charge of the studio can't look at the salaries paid for the "American Hustle" actors & say to herself "We have a problem here", nobody ever will. They'll have to be forced to do the right thing.

From the Sony hack: “The current talent deals are: O’Russell: 9%; Cooper: 9%; Bale: 9%; Renner: 9%; Lawrence: 7%; Adams: 7%.” http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/12/12/exclusive-sony-hack-reveals-jennifer-lawrence-is-paid-less-than-her-male-co-stars.html

Oscar nominations (pre-American Hustle totals) are as good a way of ranking actors for a film like American Hustle which was released in fall awards season hoping to score Oscar nominations of its own:

Amy Adams - 4 Nominations: Junebug/Doubt/The Fighter/The Master
Jennifer Lawrence - 2 Nominations/One win: Winter's Bone/Silver Linings Playbook
Jeremy Renner - 2 Nominations: The Hurt Locker/The Town
Christian Bale - 1 Nomination/One win: The Fighter
Bradley Cooper - 1 Nomination: Silver Linings Playbook

Fairness doesn't actually exist in big business. As sh-tty as it is, it's incumbent on her to not get lowballed in comparison to her male costars. Even the male stars have to find leverage to raise their quotas. She's a big enough star to negotiate higher pay.

or hell find a friend to leave with that can support you till you find a job
but you can't because you're a fucking baby which is why you're running away.
anything seriously worth running away for is worth calling the cops for so do that instead
