Idris Elba as James Bond?

1 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 20:48
I saw this article on a website I like and it makes some good points. I think he'd make a great Bond but I like the discussion. Any thoughts?

This is the article - http://thirdactfilm.com/idris-elba-play-james-bond/

I don't think he's a good enough actor. Forget about his skin color. He just doesn't have the James Bond persona.
3 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 21:24
I have to disagree, he's not always excellent (Pacific Rim?) but he's more than good enough. I guess it depends on what kind of feel they go for?
4 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 21:26
I think they should create a new character for him.
5 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 21:33
I'd be more than happy to see him in there, maybe as a bad guy or another agent? But wouldn't that be just like the Colin Salmon situation?
6 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 21:45
I think he would terribly miscast as Bond. I have no problem with Bond being black, but I really wish they'd cast someone else.
7 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 21:57
Any other casting suggestions? After watching Man from UNCLE I think Henry Cavill would really suit the part.
8 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:05
He might, but I don't think he'd be willing to simultaneously play Superman and Bond. I think they'd be best off going with an unknown actor who fits the part well.
9 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:19
I think he would be more than happy to do that! I know I would... But maybe the studios wouldn't like it.
10 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:25
He'll be too old by the time Craig is done.
11 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:33
That's a big part of what the article said too. If that wasn't an issue do you think he would've been good?
12 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:41
Maybe, but I don't think so. I've never been all that impressed with his work.
13 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:47
I think he would've been good....he's got that British accent, yeah.
14 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 22:58
True he has a great voice and a great look for the role.
15 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:08
For the last time Bond is white.
16 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:12
Do you think that's particularly important to his character? I think it's more about his being British rather than his being white. Did you feel he same about Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four?
17 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:19
Yeah brah Im sick of Hollywood doing this I think it's time to white wash Axel Foley or Shaft.
18 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:29
What about the countless times Hollywood has cast white people in non white roles?

Also I don't think Bond is classed as Hollywood, as it's a British film.
19 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:31
When did Hollywood cast white people in non white roles?
20 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:41
I don't think so.

They can do it but I won't watch it.
21 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-02 23:52
You won't watch it just because he's black?
22 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 00:05
Yes, exactly.

Why must he be black?

Why must it always be about black people?

I am really sick of this insane political correctness.

Leave James Bond alone.

If you want a black spy, then create one.

Stop leeching off the success of the Bond franchise.
23 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 00:19
So you don't think he would be good for the role if he was white? Does it really matter that much?
24 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 00:31
Of course it matters.

Must we destroy every tradition?

Why should we cast a black man as James Bond?

Except to appease political correctness, it makes no sense.

Have JayZ and Beyonce finance a film with an original black spy.

How about that?
25 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 00:42
Erm... not too sure what to say to that.
26 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 00:52
I guess not.

But, don't worry, he will be played by a black actor someday.

Then you can feel better.
27 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 01:03
Bond is not black.

But if they make Idris Elba Bond it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's certainly not traditional. Maybe that's a good thing.

What they could do is create an entirely new brand around a bond like character played by Elba. Just like they could have had made the Star Trek reboot an entirely new brand.

Elba's good, I like him in everything I've seen him in. I just don't understand why he's the perpetual frontrunner to play Bond. It doesn't offend me, I just don't get it. It's like there's a PC spell on people that stop them from noticing Bond is white, Elba's black, and if you point it out you're a racist. Real racists don't get as much actual flack as non-racists who think it's weird that a black actor can just become a white character.

Unless I'm missing something, I thought Bond is always the same person. Different actor and stuff but it could be Connery in one film, Moore in the next but as far as the surrounding characters are concerned he's the same guy. James Bond isn't a title, unless I'm missing something like I said. What happens when Elba's Bond walks into M's office, does she remark oh whoa you're black now? Anyways here's the next mission...

Well Skyfall made it so that every Bond has been the same man, because they explored his background more than ever before. That same website did an article about that and it's kind of interesting too. Having said that, do you think Daniel Craig seriously looks like Timothy Dalton? Or Roger Moore? I have as much issue thinking they're the same person too.

The lot of them don't look anything like each other without the outfit. Even then it's sort of tricky.

A lot of people were angry over the new Bond being blonde. All the others were cast to honour certain unchainging traits. The blonde was a small departure. Enough to rattle a few purist's cages, but a small departure. Being a different skin colour is about a great a departure as you can get, with possibly the only greater departure being recast as a woman.

Like the relentlessly one-note Colin Salmon, he's just not a good enough actor: he has a very limited range these days (I know people always bring up The Wire, but that was 11 years ago) and is turning into a bit of a cartoonish self parody with all the talk very, very, very softly and then SCREAM AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS RIGHT IN YOUR FACE schtick - more shouty shouty Brian Blessed in Flash Gordon than James Bond.

Chiwetel Ejiofor would be a much better choice: he has more range as an actor and his intriguing villain in Serenity showed that he can be a commanding presence in an action film without hamming it up.

Have you ever seen Luther? I think he shows a lot of range as a block of wood in that.

I've never made it through a full episode, but I thought he really overdid the "Share my pain, people!" angst in it. He just doesn't do subtlety or nuance these days - it's all "Look at me! I'm acting!" purely on the surface stuff these days.
33 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 02:16
Isn't he "too street" to play James Bond?
34 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 02:25

Ha apparently so! I can't disagree with that any more, he's more representative of British people than a rich, privileged guy.
35 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 03:44
I would hate to see a black man playing James Bond.
36 Name: Anonymous : 2015-09-03 05:21
Looks like any dumb fuck thinks he can play James Bond now, thank you Idris Elba for fucking James Bond.

Hugh Jackman would 'seriously consider' playing James Bond.
