29 August 1976 - Police fought running battles with young blacks as rioters went on an orgy of violence and destruction, smashing shop windows and attacking fleeing whites.

30 August 1987 - Michael Augustine Galvin, 23, stallholder - stabbed a black.

26 August 1991 - Nicholas John Hanscomb, 38, bled to death after being stabbed in the thigh by a black.

28 August 2000 - Greg Fitzgerald Watson, 21, stabbed to death by a black after an argument over food.

28 August 2000 - Abdul Munam Bhatti, 28, beaten to death in a racially motivated attack by a group of 40-50 black youths.

30 August 2004 - Lee Christopher Surbaran, 27, shot by a black gang using a machine pistol for "showing disrespect".

27 August 2007 - Two teenagers were shot just outside the carnival area.

26 August 2014 - Three men stabbed in violent clashes with other blacks.

The carnival has now claimed a total of five murder victims. To this can be added large numbers of assaults and robberies, and there have also been many incidents of rape and grievous bodily harm.
