Furthermore, blacks in America were only used for manual labor. What you fail to grasp is that the slave owners still had to provide food, clothes and shelter for their slaves. This costs money. If slavery had been banned from the start, the only difference would be that the plantation owners would have to pay their workers instead (which they also did. Not all plantations relied on slaves). This is exactly what they did when slavery ended as well, as the many slaves who didn't go north still needed work. Most stayed with their previous owners.

By the way, are there any neutral sources that describe how the relationship between slave owners and their slaves were? We only hear about the worst cases, because of how politically sensitive the issue is, but it would be interesting to hear how it really was; the good and the bad. Not saying slavery was a good thing, but it would be interesting to hear more than one perspective.
