We live in New York and she is struggling to find work. She has taken a few classes and was in her high school drama club, but she has never actually received a paycheck in exchange for acting a role. She asked me for career advice, so I told her that honestly I didn't think she was that good. (she was terrible). Then she cried and said that her lifelong dream is crumbling right in front of her and she begged me to help her.

I told her that what she needed more practice and lots of it. I explained to her that taking one or two classes isn't enough to develop professional level skill at anything and that if she isn't in working as an actress, she needs to be constantly practicing her craft every moment she is awake. I suggested that she try total character immersion. I gave examples of actors who never broke character on the set. I said, "Just pic a character from a movie and be that character 24/7 for two weeks. Then after two weeks, switch two a different character. Don't stop doing that until you get hired." She was really quiet after I made this suggestion. I took her silence as agreement.

The next day, I went out to do errands and buy a few groceries. When I came home, my girlfriend was watching Fight Club. She was standing in front of the television with the remote and she was rewinding and playing the scenes with Marla Singer, over and over again. I went to work and when I came home, Marla Singer was in my apartment. She had even died her hair and cut it. The transformation was startling.
