This might be news to you, but people's culture and the place they live is something they generally see as something important. It's extremely dishonest to ask someone to place the same level of care on something that happened across the world as on something that happened on their doorstep. Especially if the thing that happened close by will have consequences, no matter what.

I'm pretty sure the affected people in Nigeria care more about Boko Haram than they do about Charlie Hebdo. Are you going to call them assholes, too?
