There's a population of (mostly) teens and twenty-somethings who have become largely dependent on labels and gendered terms, while believing that said labels and terms do not define them. This isn't an intentional or even conscious form of hypocrisy in most cases: Many believe by dissecting broader terms they are helping people understand them and helping them understand themselves, and creating the sensation that they are less alone in the world when they don't fit a binary system exactly.

The issue is that many people have been and continue to be taught to see these systems as anything other than constructs designed on nebulous ideas (ie: the masculine and feminine), centered around something more concrete (human sexual dimorphism). It's just a manifestation of someone's lack of understanding, made worse by the vitriolic reactions of those who don't understand where it comes from.

I knew from the beginning it was some tumblr shit, but i never heard fluid gender, i am from Germany.

This is one of those things which is inherently harmless, but became empowered by harmful and disruptive people because of people who allow themselves to get angry when they're confused.

A lot of people deny that any gender identity other than man or woman is valid. By doing so, they reinforce the beliefs of those who hold the contrary to be true by showing them why they need these labels and increasingly complex branches to the system of identifying oneself by sex, gender and sexual preference. Additionally, by congregating amongst their own and hearing about other, once again ever-increasingly specific versions of different identities, they share in whatever problems they've encountered, through which the worst things get the most attention and the lesser things are either ignored or inflated.

This creates a compounding issue where people too militant in their own beliefs to tolerate others going about things differently perpetuate their own personal hell by adding more fuel to the fire. Similarly, acting in a needlessly sympathetic or preferential matter increases the problematic behavior by those who oppose it, and further unifies those who accept it into believing in an us-versus-them system of "progressive free thinkers" and "backwards bigots".

What a lot of people (including most of our own site's population here) have overlooked is the similarities this has to organized trolling: Any attention, positive or negative, will invoke more attention of both kinds from the intended target as well as onlookers. Ignoring it and moving on will cause it to gradually fade into obscurity.
