When a body is found without identity

Question for anyone who is a police office or in the medical field.

When a body is found without identity, how much effort is put into find out who they are? Especially if it looks like suicide.

I would assume minimal if any at all. Maybe they run prints and search any local missing persons reports for someone matching the body. I doubt they would try for more than a day or so and wouldn't check anything out of state.

After that I guess they would incinerate the body and dispose of the ashes.

Does anyone know?

Depending on the sources available it's pretty minimal. Fingerprints are run for matches, body it photographed and noted for tattoos, piercings, scars, etc. After that the body sits in a fridge for quite a while. If medical examiner or detectives are unable to identify it after a specific amount of time the body gets cremated and usually once per year or two all the unidentidfied ashes get dumped together in a mass grave. It's worth noting though that many coroners offices now have publicly available databases to look for missing loved ones that detail the body description and some have photos.
