At work whole weekend. I only go home to sleep and then back to work. Money, I has it.

I just had an argument with my parents about a Descente winter skijacket, that I got at a second-hand store. I bought the jacket for $20 in perfect condition, looked up the actual price of the thing, it was $180. I told this to my parents and got complimented for being so hawk-eyed or what. Been wearing it for the past two weeks and got complimented by a couple of my acquaintances and friends. Told about three of them, that I actually got it for $25 at a second hand store and how proud I am of that. Today I told my parents, that I got complimented. They told me, that I should be proud of that people envy me (because apparently a compliment is a sign of envy). I told them, that I'm more proud of the fact, that I got such a nice jacket for „nothing”. They got furious and told me, that I should never tell anyone, that I get my clothes at second hand store, because people will think, that I'm a lesser human being or something along those lines. That people will see me as if I was wearing a coat made out of shit, because something used is shit in the eyes of the common folks. In my parents' opinion people hang out and talk with people only out of interest, I only have friends because we own 4 busninesses and that only those people get help which have something to offer back for the help. And in their opinion this why I should never be honest and emphasize how successful I and my family is.

My question is: Am I really naive? Do people really not value honesty? Is every friendship built on interest?
